Irasshaimase! Welcome to another anime review!! Today I’ll be talking about that one anime that almost everyone seems to be going nuts after! Ouran High School Host Club!
“Ouran Private Academy is defined by one, prestigious families, and two, wealth. Prosperous people have much time on their hands. Therefore, the Ouran Host Club is about these handsome guys that have time giving hospitality to these lovely ladies who also have time and profit off of them. It’s an elegant game unique to this super-rich school.
That, in a few lines, sums up what the Ouran Host Club is all about. Now, you might be wondering, “What’s so unique about this school of spoiled brat?” Well, for one thing, not everyone at the school is high and snooty, some are rather cute (like Honey) or charming with Daddy complexes (like Tamaki). The twist is that Ouran has accepted on student based on her scholarly achievements. This student -who is actually a girl but constantly mistaken to be a boy- is Fujioka Haruhi. After a series of circumstances where she breaks a vase worth eight million yen, she must work at the Host Club for the rest of her time at Ouran in order to pay off her debt.
The anime’s all about fun-filled hilarity. The episodes constantly have little labels and tags poking fun at certain anime stereotypes, particularly those in the shojo (girls) genre. At first I was tentative in giving this series a try because I’m not really into anime or manga that incorporates cross-dressing elements, (not that they aren’t good stories, just not my cup of tea). However, I thoroughly enjoy shojo on a regular basis and am always up for poking fun at anime archetypes, typical story traits and the ridiculous preconceptions between the pampered and paupers.
It’s impossible to sum up the story of this anime. It is a mix between romance, comedy and perhaps slice of life. We get snippets of each character’s personality at the beginnings of the series and their pasts are slowly revealed to us as Haruhi develops deeper friendships and bonds with the others hosts of the club. Every character has their quirks and you’ll slowly find yourself identifying with one of them as your favourite.
At first, I thought this anime was all laughs, but like almost every other anime and manga I have watched and read, there is some heart behind the hilarity and that is what makes Ouran such a great series for all anime lovers. Every episode always leave me with a smile as I watch the end credits. To every girl who steps through the door, whether they be little girls who have lost their way, rich students who have nothing better to do, or young women who need to be cheered up, the Host Club is all about bringing happiness. So what’s your type? The wild Mori-sempai? The Loli-shouta adorable Honey-sempai? The little devils Hikaru and Kaoru? Vice-president Kyoya, the cool type? Or the Host King Lord Tamaki Suoh?
What are you pondering today?
