Cloudy’s Anime Summer Samples 2013

Ah… summer… lying in your backyard, cool glass of lemonade, anime playing on laptop or manga in hand; what better way to spend the hot days lazying the hours away? Though it still gets pretty rainy around Toronto – and definitely rainy in Hong Kong and Tokyo, these past few weeks – the rain doesn’t damper my excitement for the summer anime releases!

Gifuu Doudou!! Kanetsugu to KeijiGifuu Doudou!! Kanetsugu to Keiji

Release Date: July 2, 2013

Beginning at the end of the Sengoku period in Dewa Province, Yonezawa, the Doumori area, a celebration is taking place to honour Ohnosawa Tarobei’s new mansion. Everything is going smoothly, drinking, eating, dancing, lively chatter; until one eccentric takes up an axe to strike one of the mansion’s pillars. “Everything that’s reached its zenith will eventually decline…”  The eccentric is Maeda Keiji, a legendary samurai. His partner in crime is Naoe Kanetsugu, part of the Uesugi family, he is governor of 300 000 koku of the Yonezawa fiefdom. Drinking sake under the light of the pale moon, the pair reminisce of their younger days… in the summer of 1588, where our story really begins.

It’s a tale of honour, valour and sacrifice.. Episode 1 presents a neat premise to the story surrounding Maeda and Naoe. How they met and became comrades and legendary warriors in a time of political instability and strife.

I’m pretty excited for this anime. You can never go wrong with these kinds of samurai stories. Though I don’t usually go for seinen and historical action, the art is rather attractive and I think I’ll give this one a try.

FateKaleid Liner Prisma IllyaFate Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya

Release Date: July 6, 2013

Also known as KALMIA, Fate Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya is a spin-off from the Fate Stay Night series that follows Illyasviel von Einzbern… who becomes a magic girl. So… I’m not entirely sure what made the production company go, “Hey, since Madoka and Cardcaptors were such a hit, let’s throw some Fate Stay Night into the mix and see what happens!” It’s a weird mix, but from what I’ve seen in Japan, this anime is pretty highly anticipated. All the other features of a typical magic girl series should be present in some shape or form. Illasviel’s outfit reminds me very much of Madoka’s frilly pink skirts and her sceptre is absolutely Cardcaptors inspired. In Japan, my dad actually paused and stared at the poster with squinted eyes, asking me if Cardcaptors was back for some strange new re-mastered season.

Anticipation Rating: 3.5/5 curiously excited clouds35 CloudsExcited Transparent

Not entirely sure how I feel about Fate Stay Night with a magical girl twist but the art isn’t too bad so I might give this one a try because I’m in the mood for some pretty girl magic this season.

Kami-sama no Inai NichiyoubiKami-sama no Inai Nichiyoubi

Release Date: July 6, 2013

Also know as, The Sunday Without God. Another highly anticipated show for this season, the story follows a girl named Ai who is a gravekeeper. In this universe, after God created the world in six days, having abandoned the world on the seventh day, people are unable to die until the gravekeepers help them find peace.

20121019_kamisama03The art is amazing to say the least, even looking at the poster itself, and that’s a pretty big factor for me when I’m trying to decide whether or not to start an anime. The plot is also unique on its own, with the story having come rather far seven light novels, to three manga volumes. The story actually reminds me a lot of Melissa Marr’s young adult novel, Graveminder.

This one seems a bit dark for the lazy days of summer, but if the plot if as good as the light novels and manga sales show, it’s worth a try for at least a few episodes.

Free! – Iwatobi Swim Club

Release Date: TODAY!

I’m probably not the only one who drooled when the swimming anime commercial was released right?

What’s summer without some good looking boys running around in swimsuits? My inner shojo fangirl is squaling to the max as I spam the play button for this trailer. The anime follows a high school boys swim team, mainly starring Nanase Haruka. The story mainly focuses on the interactions between the four friends in elementary school as well as the change in dynamics when they reunite in high school. Categorized under sport, there’s probably more swimming than romance… but that’s what fan service and fanfiction is for, right?

Release Date: July 7, 2013

Recommended for fans of Black Butler and Pandora Hearts– pretty much all of my favourite animes, I’m super excited for Makai Ouji because 1) The art is gorgeous and 2) …There’s a butler in it, what more could you want? Our protagonist, William Twining is also brilliant, which makes him a lot more interesting than ditzy, undecisive heroes. Due to his uncle’s business failure, William returns home to search for money. Upon accidentally summoning a demon named Dantalion, in one of the underground rooms left by his ancestors, he’s thrown into a world of conflict between heaven and hell, a precarious balance resting on his shoulders…

(Doesn’t William Twining look strangely similar to Oz Vessalius?)

brothersconflictBrothers Conflict

Release Date: July 2, 2013

So much shojo this season!! I’m just over the moon! To start, Brothers Conflict has probably one of the most catchiest opening songs I’ve ever listened to *claps along* Fan service and fanfiction is never far when it comes to shojo harem animes. A girl named Chi… a talking squirrel called Juli… and thirteen charming brothers from hot and datable to cute and adorable! I’m not entirely sure what the plot is but there’s a lot of eye candy. If you love Starry Sky or Uta noPrince-sama Maji Love, you’ll squeal for Brothers Conflict!

Genei wo Kakeru TaiyouGenei wo Kakeru Taiyou

Release Date: July 6, 2013

When I read about this anime’s release online, I was super excited. I love that this magical girl anime is focusing on something different and new unlike the basic plot development based on seven elements, seven jewels or seven colours. I’ve always found tarot cards rather intriguing, not just because of its history dating back to the Renaissance but also of the mystery behind them. Genei wo Kakeru Taiyou follows a set of main characters that draw power from tarot cards. Talented girls chosen from twenty-two different bloodlines, reflect the twenty-two major Arcana of the tarot, wield elemental tarot into battle. Who do they fight? Why do they fight? I’m very much looking forward to this anime.

It’s a story that surely brings up the struggle of predestination and freewill and it’s one philosophical dilemma I’m looking forward to pondering in conjunction with the plot development.

Rozen Maiden

Release Date: July 4, 2013

Loved the manga? Loved the anime? Well, Rozen Maiden is back! You know what happens, boy finds totally loli-kawaii doll, meets the doll’s other sisters, is thrown into a world of magic and excitement!

Anticipation Rating: 3.5/5 happy clouds 35 Clouds Transparent

The animes mentioned above are only the ones that I’m really drawn to that lean closer to my taste as a viewer. There are definitely a lot of new slice-of-life animes being released such as Love Lab, Servant X Service and Kiniro Mosaic, just to name a few. Personally, I wait the first few episodes to hear of other slice-of-life fan responses before I delve into any of the slice-of-life stories.

Are you guys as excited as I am? This season on the whole looks pretty strong, with a good mix of many different genres, but with a few more colourful magical girls as usual. Last season’s Karneval episode recaps and reviews were something of a trial for me. I wasn’t entirely sure how to do recaps and struggled a bit along the way but thank you to everyone’s likes and all your support! This season, I’m confident in reviewing at least two or three animes. Hopefully I can keep up with those and regular reviews as well.

Many travel rants have yet to be released as well as a lot of travel photography! Thank you guys so much for liking and following! I never thought I’d get even get past the ten-followers mark, let alone reach fifty. It was an amazing summer surprise for me! Thank you for dropping by and reading, as always, new posts are coming every day!
