So far, Golden Time has given me the most pleasant and memorable impression of all the fall anime openers that I’ve seen so far. First of all, the opening song and closing song are both so adorably sweet and catchy. Both are sung by our striking new heroine Kaga Kouko, voiced by Yui Horie. Kaga is this flamboyant, passionate and slightly high strung girl who stalks follows her crush and childhood friend Mitsuou Yanagisawa all the way to Fukurai University (which he actually enrolled in, in order to avoid Kaga). Much of what we see from her is really shallow more than anything but her character is definitely one of the intense driving forces in the story.
Tada Banri (voiced by Makoto Furukawa) – Tada is the protagonist from which the story’s perspective is told. He moved from Shizuouka to Tokyo to attend Fukurai University for law.
Chinami Oka (voiced by Ibuki Kido) – a small and very cheery girl who befriends Tada on the first day of classes after bumping into him in one of the classrooms.
Linda/Hayashida (voiced by–) – One of the older students that rescues Tada from the crazy club recruitment people. She’s also the festival club.
Strangely, from the introduction of Kaga and Mitsuou’s awkward romantic entanglements, Mituou’s not the leading man of the series. He actually turns out to be another newbie that Tada meets in front of a convenience store after finding himself lost on the way to his class building. Both are rather awkward but where Mitsuou has a tendency to overreact (at least, when it come to Kaga), Tada is rather charmed by Kaga upon their first meeting.
My most impressionable moment of the episode must be when Kaga trails Mitsuou and Tada during their introductory lecture. Mitsuou rants to Tada about her crazy, unpredictable and how much of a nag Kaga actually is, unknowing that she’s actually sitting in the seat above him in the class.
Though Kaga reminds me very much of Taiga Aisaka from Toradora which is also under the same production company as Golden Time, Kaga isn’t at all a tsundere. Rather, she claims that Mitsuou is a tsundere. Kaga is a really charming and amusing character in terms of her positive spunk and incessant advances on Mitsuou despite his constant refusals. I really feel like I’m getting to that point in my otaku life where any of the new characters I encounter automatically remind me of the ones I’ve seen before (LOL)
I’m really happy with this first episode and I can’t wait to see what awaits us in future weeks with Golden Time. Thumbs up if you want more Golden Time!
