Best part of this episode was KyotoAni’s style of choreography in the action scenes when Mirai is hunting the youmu. I guess animating blood isn’t too off from animating water. Other than that, not much happens, but I can’t help but continue watching just because the animation is so pleasing to the eye.
In this episode, we learn that youmu come in all shape and sizes… some in the forms of adorable little girls like Ai Shindou. So youmu range from are civilized human-like creatures, all the way to the animalistic weaker ones. Paralleling humans-animals mammal concepts to the world of youmu gives a humanistic spin to the demons who are supposed to be the main antagonists to the Spirit Warriors. From Mirai’s point of view, I can see why she’d be shocked.
Luckily Mirai’s reservations of slaying youmu isn’t due to her aversion to blood or violence (because of shy moe-ness). Her strange power doesn’t just utilize blood, but feeds off her blood, leaving her faint after the battle. From the few flash back glimpses we’re given, there must be some tragic event pertaining to her family. She even briefly mentions having killed someone near the end of the episode.
This episode more or less settles us into the world of Kyoukai no Kanata. More of the spirit world system is revealed to us. A little more character relationship development is revealed between Akihito and Mirai but I’m already a little bit irritated at how much moe clumsiness they’ve inserted, even in Mirai’s hunt of the small youmu. She’s about to give up but only continues the hunt when Akihito motivates her by mentioning her financial struggles with food and rent (LOL) So not all heroes are financially secure and do well in school and only need to focus on their demon fighting career. But it’s pretty hilarious to see Mirai wandering around the train tracks looking for Ayaka Shindou at the studio. She’s really an odd one…
Anyway, I can’t wait till all the introductory stuff is done and we get into the bulk of the plot. The little bit of story development regards the lesser youmu being affected by the aura of a powerful youmu called the Hollow Shadow. I would really like to see A LOT more character growth beyond first shallow impressions. For now, I’m happily enjoying KyotoAni’s beautiful animation. My favourite character as of right now is Mitsuki, she’s like Mio with an attitude. Pretty awesome. Does Akihito’s hair bother you guys? I wish he’d comb it or do something with it. It’s just everywhere.
LOVING the ending song ❤ called “Daisy” by Stereo Dive Foundation and I can’t wait for the full version to be released!
