Cloudy Says Cheers!!

Hey guys, haven’t done a Cloudy Says in a while so I have lots of new news for you guys. First of all… HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! 明けましておめでとうございます (Akemashite Omedetōgozaimasu) and  新年快樂!! Second of all, thank you all for a wonderful 2013 here on Little Cloud Curiosity. I’d like to thank each and every one of you for stopping by, clicking around and reading.

K-On Tea Party

I’ve decided that during the in between season of anime to focus a bit on manga series. I do love reviewing new manga very much and I’m not going to do a list this time because I’ve realized that I review a lot on inspiration so I don’t end up following those lists very well. If I have a flash of inspiration pertaining to the Light Otaku Rants, I will definitely write those too. For anime, continuing from the fall Season into winter is Tokyo Ravens and Kill La Kill (whoo!) so this in between period is a great way to rewatch the series or reread some reviews to remember what happened in the first half before the second half begins. I’m working on the post for the new winter season as of right now. If you would like a list of all my fall season anime, check out the anime season page at the top or scroll through the side bar. If you’re looking for a rundown of the latest posts, check out the Recent Posts widget at the bottom.

This week I reworked some categories in the right bar so hopefully some reviews are easier to find. All the rants have been split from Light Otaku Living into the Light Otaku Rants category and all the manga reviews have been re-categorized as well.  Here is some fanart from Kill La Kill to welcome 2014, Mako’s positive determination is a great way to kick off the new year.

I hope you all had a great year wherever you are and here’s to more great things in the New Year. Cheers!!!

Little Cloud Curiosity`s Nominated for THE LIEBSTER AWARD

Hey guys, this post is going to be a bit different…

Thank you thank you so much to Otaku Orbit for nominating me for the Liebster Award. I honestly didn’t think I would become so immersed into the blog world when I first started in my first year of university as a stress reliever from exams.

The Liebster award is designed to give exposure to new or smaller blogs with less than 200 followers. Here are the rules/requirements…

1) Link back to the blogger who nominated you.

2) Answer the 11 questions given to you by the blogger who nominated you.

3) Nominate 1 other bloggers with less than 200 followers

4) Go to the blogs you nominated and notify them of your nomination

5) Give your nominees 11 questions to answer

Here are the questions I was given…

1) Whats’ your favorite Anime and/or Manga series?

I think my favourite manga series has to be Pandora Hearts. When I first encountered the series, it was the story and art that pushed me out of the more kiddy-styled art and stories to more mature and darker themes. I love seeing series that rework the classic Alice in Wonderland aesthetics and ideas into new stories.

Pandora Hearts

2) What’s the most played song on your iPod?

My most played song on my iPod is “Luminous” by ClariS which was released with the Puella Magi Madoka Magica Movie. It’s so catchy and makes me feel like a magic girl when I listen to it. FLYYYYYYYYYY!!!!

3) If you could travel through time or travel through space which would you choose?

I would travel through time to meet my favourite historical figures and my own ancestors and maybe put a mustache on the Mona Lisa just to see how the art critics of the present would try and make sense of it.

4) If you could be the best athlete in any sport which sport would you choose?

Definitely figure skating. It combines both of my two childhood favourites – dance and gymnastics.

5) If you could live in any fictional universe which would it be?

I would definitely have to choose Jin Yong’s Legend of the Condor Shooting Heroes in China in the Song Dynasty and learn most kickass martial arts EVER. I grew up with all those ancient Chinese stories so they really stick with me and all the history in those stories are a part of my roots.

6) What was the hardest thing you had to learn?

The hardest thing I’ve had to learn is that as much support as everyone gives you in life, it all comes down to your hard work and personal resolve. Oliver Goldsmith once said, “Our greatest glory consists not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” You’ve got to know how to build a tough skin in life and pick yourself up no matter how hard it gets.

7) What’s the best part of being a blogger? What’s the worst?

The best thing about being a blogger is getting to write what I like to write. When there are so many trends, fads or ideas that media and other societal pressures, it’s nice to know that when you put your heart into your writing, when you’re writing things for no reason other than the fact that it’s your passion, there are people genuinely interested in your thoughts and willing to listen.

The worst part of being a blogger is probably juggling the blogging life with my regular life. Especially during the school year, it’s a challenge to keep up both my grades and my blog life but the pressure also drives me to be a more organized person.

8) Do you play video games? If so which genre is your favorite?

I do play video games and I grew up playing through every generation of Nintendo – from the grey block Gameboy all the way to the newest 3DS’s. I also enjoy online MMORPG games from time to time so my favourite genre is fantasy because it allows you to experience a completely different world and live a life of magic and monsters that, though it’s sad to say, might never be possible in the world.

9) If you can transform into one animal at will which one would it be?

I feel like this is the question that gets you during interviews cause it takes you by surprise. I would really want to try being a dragon because I’ve always wanted to fly… and spitting fire sounds pretty cool too.

10) Which “weapon” would you choose? A wand from Harry Potter, A lightsaber from Star Wars, or the sonic screwdriver from Dr. Who?

I would have to choose the lightsaber from Star Wars, but I’d probably have a greater chance of amputating myself… or others, than actually figuring out how to use it. I’d put an advertisement in the paper looking for a Yoda master to teach me the ways of the Jedi *bows head*

11) Do you see yourself blogging in 3 years?

I definitely see myself blogging in three years. I initially started my blog just to showcase photography but it’s become an extension of myself now. It’s a great place to interact with other people who have similar interests or insightful views to share. I look forward to blogging everyday and even when I say that I’m going to take a few days off because of school work or some holiday, I get blogger’s separation anxiety with my site haha

Now here is my list of nominations…

… And now for my 11 questions

1) If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

2) Why did you start blogging?

3) What’s your favourite anime or manga character and why?

4) Who is your biggest inspiration in life?

5) Do you think being an introvert or extrovert is more advantageous as a blogger?

6) If you enjoy books, what’s your favourite genre?

7) What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned thus far?

8) If you were a superhero, what superhero name would you take?

9) During a zombie apocalypse, what weapon would you go for?

10) Do you prefer sweet snacks or salty ones?

11) Where do you see yourself in three years?

Here are 11 Random Facts about Myself…

1) I love collecting stuff in general, not just anime stuff but coins, stamps, Christmas ornaments, pocky, and so on…

2) I know roughly five different languages – English, French, Cantonese, Mandarin and Latin

3) I absolutely love How I Met Your Mother, I follow, watch and rewatch religiously

4) I have such a huge sweet tooth for desserts and tasty treats

5) I’m classically trained in Ballet and danced for 18 years

6) I’m really spontaneous and do things on a flash of inspiration or even a whim

7) I am intensely crazy artsy and as a result I hate handling numbers and figures

8) I love travelling, it makes me feel free

9) I’m slightly addicted to Starbucks… just slightly, I swear!

10) I have blogger’s separation anxiety when I withhold from posting for more than two days

11) I got into the anime otaku and manga life because of my dad

So this is my Liebster Award post. Special thanks to Otaku Orbit for the nomination again and to all of you readers and followers! Love you guys!

Canadian Winter 2013 Ice Photography

Hey guys, it’s been a really busy two weeks catching up on reviews and other otaku features. Today I felt like winding down with some classic landscape outdoors photography. For those of you who don’t live in Canada, this is just how cold it can get…

Taken with my trusty Nikon 3100, Sigma 17-70mm macro lens and a lot of strange photographer positions on the ice and in the snow. Even for Canada, it’s pretty rare that everything gets ice-ified outside so it was a good opportunity to take some interesting pictures.

Haruhi Suzumiya Artbooks~~

Yesterday I finally got the chance to visit my local bookstore and I saw these two awesome Haruhi Suzumiya Artbooks all new and recently in stores. Didn’t get a chance to go earlier because of exams and whatnot so I’m here to share a little intro on them today.

If you’re a huge fan of the series and you already have the “Haruhi Suzumiya  Illustrations Spring and Summer” collection you definitely want the artbook with Yuki on the cover, the “Haruhi Suzumiya Illustrations: Autumn & Winter” collection. I also happened upon a copy of bright red artbook featuring Haruhi herself is entitled the “Haruhi-ism: Noizi Ito Artworks” released just this summer. All are published by Udon Entertainment in North America featuring illustrations from the anime DVD cover, promos, posters, manga covers and more. They’re about two thirds of an inch thick and really vivid gorgeous illustrations on gloss paper. There usually isn’t any difference between the Japanese original copy and the North American one just because it’s all visuals. If there’s any Japanese text, it’ll usually be translated.

So I took some photos for you guys, if you’re interested and you live in Canada or the United States, you can probably find a copy at the Chapters and Indigo’s Official Website or Amazon or Barnes and Nobles’ Online Site since they’ve been officially licensed on this side of the world.

Boxing Day Goodie: DNA Headphones by Monster Thoughts and the Headphones Rant

20131226_220028bI don’t write a lot of music posts here on LCC but occasionally when I review an album, I definitely go through the first listen with good quality over the ear headphones. I have a bad habit of switching headphone quite a bit. When I find a pair that has better bass or crisper sound or even a better design on top of sound quality, I’ll ditch my old pair for new ones. As I’ve grown up, I’ve gone from regular earbuds to in-ear earbuds with better noise cancelling capabilities and slowly but surely I made my way to the larger over ear noise cancelling big boys. I went through a few brands, borrowing some from friends and testing out others in stores – I even bought a Skullcandy pair at one point and still I wasn’t happy with the sound quality… I either want really intense bass booming away into my ears or an overall balanced. Headphones that have super crisp sounds with emphases on the highs and none on the lows make my ears hurt after a while. Not to mention the physical design of some headphones. I’m sure you probably know what I mean with the red hot ears…

My latest favourite were the Panasonic RP-HXD3W in red (really it’s more of a magenta) that I picked up while I was in Hong Kong last year when they were around full retail price of $60-$70 Canadian dollars after conversion. They were a stylish design in my favourite colour, I got to test them out in the store beforehand and they were a reasonable price affordable with my well-saved up birthday moneys. I still love them even after I got my new Monster DNA pair just because I like how the bass is tweaked. I have to admit, however, that in terms of overall music quality, clearness of sound, packaging and accessories, the DNAs wins hands down. I guess when it comes down to headphones, it’s all down to preference. Maybe you have seven pairs of big headphones, one for every day and mood of the week. It’s all down to what you like and who cares if someone tells you that they’re overrated or overpriced (even though it’s true with some of the Dr. Dre Beats). I’m not a super pro tech-savvy audiophile but I’ve grown up with this interest in headphones and my ears are classically musically trained so there are some things I would probably pick up from the sound quality that a regular consumer with no music history may not. So now after that long winded introduction, let’s get into my review on the Monster DNA headphones.

First of all, I don’t usually splurge on electronics, I’m the type to line up at five in the morning on boxing day if I can get a laptop for like two to three hundred dollars when there are only like twenty in the store so I never really contemplated getting high-end headphones like the Monsters or even Dr.Dre now that they’ve separated into separate companies. I would take the opportunity to try on the Beats in the store but buying them was and will always be way out of my price range. Also, the Beats aren’t my style, I don’t listen to rap nor techno pounding music so a pair the Monster DNA is really better suited for me.

The DNA is not only a really sleek and stylish fashion statement, sporting triangular over ear cans, but they come in several colours plus customizable extras (for a price of course) so they’re all very tailored to the culturally hip consumers that want to keep up with trends. Personally, I wouldn’t having a stylish look after the  mind wearing plain black head phones as long as they had a really great sound to them but having the DNA pair in a teal and white are a bonus for me. I picked up my pair for $99 dollars during the crazy Boxing Day sale at Best Buy and though I wandered the store contemplating the frugality of my purchase, eventually I went home and took them out of the box.

The packaging is nicely designed, when you open it up, everything’s fitted nicely in boxes to compliment the headphones in the middle of your box. The whole package comes with the headphones, two pairs of cables, a cleaning cloth and a pretty durable waterproof soft case. I expected a hard case initially but after checking out some of the online reviews. There is such a three dimensionally balanced and rounded sound. Now, I mainly listen to Japanese or Chinese pop, often rock pop and sometimes mainstream pop or classical music so the DNAs are great for me.  I love high quality sound systems and headphones but I’m not such an intensive anglophile that I’m going to slam the DNA because of some distortion I hear. It bothers me in some songs that I’ve downloaded but when paired with music that I’ve ripped from official CDs that I’ve purchased, there’s less fuzz. The coolest thing about these headphones is the fact that they have two different ports for your headphones so you can have your preference for where the headphone cable is. As well, due to the dual headphone ports you can share music by linking a miscellaneous pair of headphones or if all your friends have DNAs you can make a circle of music. Pretty cool right?

I am overall really pleased with these headphones, they are the most comfortable ones I’ve ever tried but of course, I’m not a pro headphone reviewer but your music-lover consumer so these are just my thoughts. If you’ve read the rant up till the end, thanks for sticking with me. I just write and spew thoughts when I rant so there isn’t as much organization to it. Hopefully something above helped you with your headphone purchase decisions!

Boxing Day Special!!! Fate/Zero Saber Nendoroid

Hello everyone and HAPPY BOXING DAY!!!! I hope you all had some very warm and wonderful Christmas dinners. Did you receive some nice presents? Or have you gotten to that age where you  just get gift cards? The present boxes get smaller every year am I right? If you have a parent that perhaps understands your otaku fandom, maybe you’ll get something like what I got this year…

Special thanks to my Daddy for this adorably badass Saber Nendoroid ❤ and another shoutout to AmiAmi for getting my present here on time!!

If you don’t already know this, the Nendoroids are a series of chibi-ized figures by Good Smile Company. They’re usually pretty pricey so the Nendoroid collectors are mad good online hunters. The reason they’re priced high of the set of parts that comes with a figure. Saber is one of the main characters of the Fate Series/Franchise and in the Fate/Zero series, she’s sporting a sleek black suit which is really nicely done on the figure. As well, the figure comes with two changeable facial expressions, two sets of legs, arms, hands, hair, one extra suit top, one motorcycle and of course her famous Excalibur sword. There also two types of stands, one that’s a translucent white (that you can see in the photos) and another that’s printed with a wood pattern Nendoroids are pretty fun to play with because of all the different poses your figure can take depending on how you combine each of the body parts and they just look so fabulous on your shelves making imitations or lesser quality figures look shabby. My favourite part of Nendoroids as a collectory is probably that lovely and smooth matte paint finish that demonstrates just how well made the figure is. Saber is my second Nendoroid and in the four years I’ve been collecting figures, I’ve only purchased one other Nendoroid figure upon my first trip to Japan from the K-On line of Nendoroids.

I had tons of fun doing some basic photography for Saber and I can’t wait to set up proper shoot for Saber soon. My mom collects Hello Kitty and my dad and I both collect Gundams from time to time so I had a bit of fun mixing the characters up in a scene haha.

I hope you guys enjoyed this special Out of the Box feature. What did you guys get for Boxing Day? Generic stuff or something special from someone who knows you well? Let me know in the comments and we can rant about how some relatives just give random gift sets that you have no use for. I’ve gotten pretty” soap before. And if you’re hitting the malls and bringing out your inner shopper, I wish you the best of luck on your boxing day hunt… Don’t bite anyone.
