Nobunaga the Fool Episode 9 (16)In light of Joan’s new powers through the Regalia of protection, Da Vinci crafts a mecha suit for her out of the pieces of armour salvaged from the battlefield. Surprisingly, it looks pretty high tech – but this is da vinci we’re talking about.

The way the east and western aspects meld together is beyond me. If you notice carefully at how factory and building equipment is constrcted. I mean, if you have the technological means to move heavy machinery, why is it suspended on ROPE?!?!  But I digress…

Nobunaga the Fool Episode 9 (1)

While Caesar is consolidating the Takeda forces with Uesugi Kenshin and his clan, the Oda clan is still somewhat conflicted with their internal stability. Himiko is doing her own thing, trying to make food for her betrothed or seduce him and what not, Joan and Da Vinci are working out the details of the Regalia armour. On the other side of court politics where Mitsuhide is getting Macbeth-Banquo murder dreams, Ichihime visits him. They speak mainly in metaphors but I can sense that Ichihime wishes to be by Mitsuhide’s side. DO I SENSE A COUPLE IN THE MAKING? Probably not because Mitsuhide is Nobukatsu’s murderer, Ichihime desires to share the Mitsuhide’s burden in the shadows but Mitsuhide chooses to be alone.

“If shadows must exist where light resides, I can shoulder that burden in its entirety…” – Mitsuhide

Nobunaga the Fool Episode 9 (27)

Although the Regalia activated in battle, Joan seems to be having a difficult time re-activating it and somehow Da Vinci hypothesizes that it requires the host’s mortal danger in order to spur the willpower to activate the Regalia but in the end, it’s really Joan’s new resolve and understanding that ultimately activates it. The episode concludes with Nobunaga who enters the war council area to rally his men (and thanks to Da Vinci’s speakers), also the people of the Oda clan to fight instead of surrender.

“The Oda name only has meaning when it bears the honour of a warrior! The Oda’s path lies through the raging flames! Cherish the honour of the Oda and become a sword!” – Nobunaga

On the balcony of the Oda mansion, Ichihime offers the Bowl of Emptiness to Nobunaga who’s officially taken up leadership of the Oda clan. Nobunaga accepts this and vows to unite heaven and earth under his command.

We are seeing much of a love triangle develop between Nobunaga, Himiko and Joan, even though msot of it is Himiko advancing the love triangle in the plot. I wonder what Joan feels for Nobunaga. After all, he’s an eastern man that looks abruptly different from the people she’d grown up with. He is clearly a heretic as well as the spoken one of the prophecy. At the same time, she began with a selfish desire to simply Nobunaga as a man whereas, the true key to unlocking the Regalia’s power is through the desire to protect both heaven and earth.
