Cloudy’s Spring Anime 2014 Rundown

WOW WOW WOW There is such a LONG LIST of anime for this spring season’s anime lineup. Since winter was a bit of a dud for most of us, either following the more popular shows like Nobunaga the Fool and Noragami or finishing up shows from the season before that for Kill La Kill and Tokyo Ravens, the spring lineup is giving us an amazing start with a bunch of high action, intense fantasy shows plus a really healthy mix of everything from every genre. I’ve chosen a diverse range of samples from the new shows judging by art style, general premise and story in the manga or novel (if there is one) and in some cases, producing company. If you’ve followed me for a while or you know me in person, you’ll get a sense of my anime palette and if it lines up with yours, hopefully you guys will find something within this long list to your liking. Now without further ado…

Black BulletBlack Bullet- Based on a light novel written by Shiden Kanzaki and illustrated by Hon Morino, this action, mystery, sci-fi and seinen adventure takes place in an apocalyptic world where humans have been nearly wiped out by a parasite known as the Gastrea. Cue the kickass organization with an equally kickass name *cough* – Civil Security, well, the characters are probably cooler. Rentaro is a boy that specializes in fighting the Gastrea with his partner Enju. I have to say, I’m pretty excited for this one because both Yui Horie (Yuki from Vampire Knight, Minori from Toradora, Kouko from Golden Time) and Yuki Kaji (Eren from Shingeki no Kyojin, Kanato from Diabolik Lovers, Wataru from BroCon) are in it. Kaji is taking the role of Rentaro and though he’s not paired with Horie, I can’t wait to see her voice acting talents showcased once more in this dark action series. Kaji’s leading lady will be voiced by Rina Hidaka (Hozuki Ferrari from Galilei Donna, Ririchiyo Shirakiin from Inu X Boku SS) and Aki Toyosaki (Yui from K-On, Funabori from D-Frag). UWAAA so many amazing seiyuus in this one! I can hardly wait! Release Date: April 8, 2014

Break BladeBreak Blade- Based on the original manga written and illustrated by Yunosuke Yoshinaga, this action, mecha, military, fantasy show has a fair amount of anticipation circulating among fans. Our story takes place in a world where magic is possible through the manipulation of “quartz.” Our hero is Rygart Arrow and it just so happens that he is an “un-sorcerer” which means he has no magical abilities. However this characteristic allows him to operate something called an “ancient Golem” which will aid his people against the invading army of Athens. There have been six Break Blade movies so far and many fans of the series are looking forward to see this remake. Starring Hoshi Souichirou (Makoto Isshiki from Chuunibyou, Keiichi Maebara from Higurashi, Kira from Gundam Seed Destiny), Kamiya Hiroshi (Rivaille from Shingeki no Kyojin, Yato from Noragami and Yuzuru Otonashi from Angel Beats), Nakamura Yuuichi (Okazaki Tomoya in Clannad, Soushi Miketsukami from Inu X Boku SS, Kyousuke Kousaka from Oreimo, Hatori Yoshiyuki from Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi) and Saito Chiwa (Chitose from D-Frag, Tatenashi from Infinite Stratos and Homura from Madoka Magica), this cast is a great starter to the adaptation. Release Date: April 6, 2014

Escha & Logy no Atelier- Tasogare no Sora no RenkinjutsushiEscha & Logy no Atelier: Tasogare no Sora no Renkinjutsushi- also called Alchemists of the Dusky Sky is based on a PS3 RPG game developed by Gust Co. Ltd.- This fantasy adventure game takes place in a world where alchemy is the main means of technology and power. Escha and Logy meet and somehow find success together in this world… I haven’t played the games but judging by the promotional video, the characters are crazy detailed in their designs and very unique. Each and every single one is so captivating so I’m eager to see what surprises the pilot will bring. If fantasy is your thing, give this one a go this season. Release Date: April 10, 2014

Gokukoku no BrynhildrGokukoku no Brynhildr- Otherwise known as Brynhildr in the Darkness, this season showcases the anime adaptation of this mystery, fantasy, sci-fi, seinen story original by Lynn Okamoto. It follows a boy named Murakami, who crushed on a girl named Kuroneko as a child. Although she claimed to know about aliens, no one believed her but when she decides to quell Murakami’s skepticism by showing him an alien, the result is an accident in which Murakami is hospitalized, and Kuroneko is killed. The story follows Murakami who is determined to prove the existence of aliens to honour his promise to his childhood friend but strangely, he meets a new transfer student that looks exactly like Kuroneko. Naturally chaos ensues after this crazy initial setting…  Kuroneko is voiced by the lovely Risa Takeda (Mirai from Kyoukai no Kanata, Yukina from Strike the Blood) while Murakami will be voiced by Ryota Ohsaka (Marco from Shingeki no Kyojin, Chika from Super Seisyun Brothers, Staz from Blood Lad). Release Date: April 6, 2014

Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu KaGochuumon wa Usagi Desu Ka?- Initially I wasn’t sure about how I felt about this show. The premise follows a girl named Kokoa who ends up in a café called Rabbit House where she meets a bunch of different girls named after café drinks… The show falls under comedy and slice of life but honestly if you’re into cute girls, by all means, go for this one; featuring the voices of Ayane Sakura, Inori Minase, Maaya Uchida, Risa Taneda and Satomi Satou. Release Date: April 10, 2014

Haikyuu!!- I really think that after the success oHaikyuuf Kuroko no Basket and Free in the past year and a half that all anime producers are going to turn every single sport into a bishounen free-for-all intense shipping anime adaptation. After all, what makes sports more exciting? Sports played by good looking guys, or in this case, bishies. This new series follows Shouyou Hinata’s dream to take the “King of the Court” title from his rival Toobio Kageyama. Let the shipping and doujins begin. Release Date: April 6, 2014

Isshuukan FriendsIsshuukan Friends- translated as One Week Friends, this series follows a boy named Yuuki Hase and a girl named Kaori Fujimiya who has a strange (let’s call it) condition, where her happy memories disappear every week. Despite this, Yuuki strives to befriend Kaori week after week… This school, shonen, slice of life is based on a manga originally by Maccha Hazuki. I found the premise so refreshing and yet so tragic and sweet that I couldn’t help but add it to the list for anyone looking to wind down from any of the action or fantasy shows this season. Voiced by Sora Amamiya and Yoshitaka Yamaya, two relatively new seiyuus, I’m excited to see their chemistry on screen. Release Date: April 7, 2014

Kamigami no AsobiKamigami no Asobi- Calling all otome gamers and fangirls, GET READY TO SCREAM because a new otome adaptation IS BACK with the sexy voices of Kamiya Hiroshi, Yuki Kaji and Daisuke Ono PART OF THE MAIN CAST. Kamigami no Asobi: Ludere Deorum (translated to mean The Teasing of the Gods) follows a new heroine named Yui Kusanagi (voiced by Saori Hayami) who discovers a sword that transports her to the world of the gods where she is tasked, by Zeus – Yes, the Greek god, Zeus – to teach the younger gods what it mean to love in order to strengthen the relationship between humans and gods. If you have any interest for Greek mythology, you’ll notice that Zeus, Apollo and Hades are both in the story. As well, Thoth and Anubis from Egyptian mythology and even Baldr and Loki from Norse mythology. It’s a really interesting story world that brings a variety of gods together. ALL THE MALE CHARACTERS SING THE THEME SONG so be on the lookout for merch produced by Broccoli. The score sounds AMAZING in the trailer (YAY for Elements Garden) Release Date: April 6, 2014

Love Live Season 2Love Live! School Idol Project Second Season- UWAAA! LOVE LIVE IS BACK FOR A SECOND SEASON! YAYYYYYY – Yes I’m a girl and yes I’m not a part of the main love live demographic but I love it anyway because I love J-Pop and anime music. The story follows a girl named Honoka Kousaka who with her two best friends assembles an idol group called “Muse” in order to garner popularity for her school so that it won’t be shut down. Naturally, they achieve their idol dreams… it’s a really light and fun anime with the cast reprising their roles. If you guys want to check out my thoughts on Season One, click here. Release Date: April 6, 2014

M3- Sono Kuroki HaganeM3: Sono Kuroki Hagane: Made by the same company that did Kamichama Karin, Fairy Tale, AkB0048 next stage, Log Horizon and Nobunaga the Fool, Staelight is back with a new futuristic sci-fi series where humans are hunted by Imashime who threaten mankind’s survival. the story falls in the action and mecha genres and while the poster art looks intriguing, we won’t know exactly what direction the series will take until it airs although director Junichi Sato’s name in the production details is generating some hype. Release Date: April 21, 2014

Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei2Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei- is one of the most anticipated anime series this season produced by Madhouse Studios that brought you Death Note, various CLAMP adaptations, High School of the Dead, Claymore and Monster. The story, based on a light novel written by Tsutomu Satou and illustrated by Kana Ishida, brings you a story of magic, romance, school sci-fi, shonen and supernatural. Mahouka Kouko no Retoousei brings to the season a new blend of magic and technology in a story that follows a pair of siblings that enter Magic high School in order to become skilled users of these supernatural magic powers. The art is just GORGEOUS and the promotional video is really hyping things up so it definitely deserves your attention. Miyuki Shiba will be voiced by Saori Hayami (Chiriko Tsurumi from AnoHana, Yui in this season’s Kamigami no Asobi, Sachi from SAO) while her brother Tatsuya Shiba will be voiced by NAKAMURA YUIICHI!!!! (Okazaki Tomoya in Clannad, Soushi MIketsukami from Inu X Boku SS, Kyousuke Kousaka from Oreimo, Hatori Yoshiyuki from Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi) (Release Date: April 6, 2014

Mahou Shoujo TaisenMahou Shoujo Taisen- This anime is apparently adapted by the project created from the variety show for the Otaku… the characters’ amazing art and stunning design caught my eye. There’s nothing more revealed about the plot but the characters that won in the second illustration competitions held on Pixic will appear in this anime. Release Date: April 8, 2014

Mekaku City Actors- It seems like ever since the popularity Sword Art Online and Log Horizon, we’ve been seeing a lot more video-game-otaku-centric anime stories. Mekaku City ActorsMekaku City Actors and No Game, No Life (produced by Madhouse Studios) are both interesting contenders in a similar area of genre but I chose to feature Mekaku City Actors because it is produced by SHAFT which has brought us the all gorgeous animation and neck-breaking camera tilts from notable series such as Madoka Magica, AnoHana and Nisekoi. The story follows Shintaro Kisaragi (whose voice actor’s name seems yet to be released), a HikiNEET (a very socially withdrawn young person not educated, employed or trained) who has shut himself up. In his isolation, he meets a cyber-girl named Enomoto “Ene” Takane (voiced by Kana Asumi; Yuno from Hidamari Sketch, Marika Tachibana from Nisekoi, Ran from Shugo Chara). To be honest, I’m not that into the video game genre after reading something as exceptional as the .hack series. I’m hoping Shaft’s animation will draw me into the action. Release Date: April 13, 2014

Ryuugajou Nanana no MaizoukinRyuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin- Otherwise known as Nanana’s Buried Treasure, the story of a boy named Juungo Yama who transfers to a high school on an island and ends up renting an apartment apparently haunted by Nanana (a ghost who was formerly a NEET). Juungo, along with the students of the school’s adventure club embrak on a treasure hunting royale for Nanana’s Collection… Really interesting concept, the characters on the poster design look really unique and it’s produced by A-1 Pictures which warrants a watch. Release Date: April 10, 2014

Knights of SidoniaSidonia no Kishi/Knights of Sidonia- Whooooooo, Sci-Fi fans should be super excited that this popular manga series is getting an anime adaptation. The story follows a boy named Nagate Tanikaze who ends up mastering the skills of a Guardian Pilot and sets out to defend Sidonia from alien monsters called Gauna. Featuring the voices of Aki Toyasaki (Tetsudou from AnoHana, Funabori from D-Frag and Yui Hirsawa from K-On), Ryota Ohsaka (Staz from Blood Lad, Nice from Hamatora, Marco from Shingeki no Kyojin) Satomi Arai (Kuroko from Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S) and Eri Kitamura (Dee from Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi, Kichi and Gareki from Karneval and Sayaka from Madoka Magica). Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi ~Valentine-hen~- I am OVER THE MOON about this Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi movie. All you fangirls of boys love and Nakamura Shungiku, your inner yaoi lover will KYAAAAAA at this valentine’s day/white day special featuring the side couple story between Yokozawa Takafumi (voiced by Kenyu Horiuchi) and Zen Kirishima (Toru Furuya). Yui Horie is also in the movie, voicing Zen’s daughter, Hiyori Kirishima. Junjou Rmoantica fans and Sekaiichi Hatsukoi fans unite! We might even see cameos from JR. I am so excited for this **O///////////O** Release Date: March 15, 2014

Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi ~Valentine-hen

IT IS IMPORTANT ALSO TO NOTE THAT- Jojo is getting Stardust Crusaders spinoff, Dragon Ball Kai is returning with more of your favourite world, Fairy Tail is getting a new series, Date Alive is getting SEASON 2, Soul Eater Not! is getting its adorable parody comedy adaptation,  La Corda D’Oro is being retold, Mushishi is getting a sequel and Idolm@aster reappears in chibi form…

We have just looked at twelve different anime series from a bunch of different genres and animation styles. I hope that between Black Bullet, Mekaku City Actors and some of the spinoff series, you’ll find something to your liking this spring. Please let me know if you would like me to check out any series I have left out because I’ve cut some of the more kiddy-seeming anime series in the card fighting and elementary school mecha category as well as some other series that just didn’t stand out for me on first go. However, if there’s something I missed that you REALLY want to see reviewed here on LittleCloudCuriosity, leave a comment below and I will definitely check it out. I will be so hard to narrow down what I’ll be following this season because both Nobuanga the Fool and Nisekoi carry over into the spring season past their twelve episode mark. Also, it will be hard to find something as funny as D-Frag and as action-intense as Kill La Kill to replace those series in my weekly schedule but this season is looking strong.

  1. I am going to be following a few of the ones you highlighted. With video-game inspired genre also following No Game, No Life. In that regard because Ai Kayano is going to voice the main heroine and I just love her voicing from Guilty Crown as Inori/Mana.

I also have to say I’m a big worried on how I’ll follow and review some of the upcoming series for Spring since Nobunaga the Fool is still going to carry into the Spring 2014 season:)
