Yama Juugo, disowned by his father, arrives on Nanae Island to the Student Special zone where students make up most of the population with a wide range of courses offered at state-of-the-art facilities. Yama is given the key to Room 202 at the Happy House… where he sees a strange girl named Nanana sitting in her room eating pudding. When he approaches the land lady about the girl, the land lady can’t see her. The land lady tells him that she’s the ghost of a girl who’s been murdered about ten years earlier. Like WHOA talk about your housing issues…
The girl turns out to be Nanana Ryuugajou, she explains that she was probably stabbed in the back when she was murdered. Yama in his disbelief attempts to shake her hand before finally realizing that she’s actually a ghost. Although Nanana can physically touch things in the living world, people in the living room pass right through her. Nanana explains that she’s unable to leave the room and hypothesizes that she could probably move on if she found her murderer. The physically fight for who’s going to be the main resident of the house and call the rules resulting in a rather… awkward position. Yuma ends up with a dislocated shoulder at the end of the day before he heads to school.
Yama slowly gets use to Nanana being around the house. And eating all his pudding. but living with a ghost definitely isn’t easy. When he’s in the bathroom one day, he find a Nanana manual denoting Nanana’s weaknesses, favourite food. The writer of the manual advises Yama to visit the adventure club at school if he’s interested in the Nanana collection and finally asks the reader to care for Nanana as a friend. Yama becomes increasingly interested in Nanana’s murder case. In his research, he finds out that his land lady, Maboro Shiki was one of the Great 7 that created Nanae Island. Shiki tells Yama that Nanana went on adventures in order to raise money for the projects on the island and that Nanana’s collection, rumoured to be somewhere on this island, is believed to contain riches and treasures somewhere on this island.
The episode definitely took a while to set the premise with the main character after the immediate inciting incident between Yama and Nanana. They waste no time introducing Nanana but getting to the purpose of the plot drags on until the end of the episode. If you’re an adventure, mystery, comedy sort of light anime watched, you’ll enjoy Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin. Other than the storyline, the animation and character designs are generally average.
