Across the city, Kang Zhen Tian is contemplating his past, particularly the bloody gun fight they had just after hitting jackpot in the desert.
When Lan Lan gets Yin Zheng to bed, he reflects on his past, his hatred for his mother’s remarriage, his frustration at his helplessness and the time he fell down a hole in the forest, trapped for days.
Kang Zhen Tian remembers the same memory that Yin Zheng thought of. He brings his own birthday cake to his wife’s bedside and she smiles at his thoughtfulness. Luckily all is not loss on this birthday night. He apologizes to her and thanks her for the cake. He knows the awkward father-son relationship between him and Yin Zheng has always been hard on her.
The next day Yin Zheng arrives at the office to find his father lounging casually on the couch on his office. Kang Zhen Tian attempts to make up with Yin Zheng but his son is as hostile and callous as ever. Yin Zheng sends his personal assistant to try and convince an executive of Z & X to defer to their side. He bribes the man with a triple of his salary and a car. He still refuses.
Si Han gets word of a fire that happened upon two Z & X stores just this morning. After he surveys the damage, he gets a call from a business associate telling Si Han that he’s going to break their contract. Si Han begins to do damage control on the impact of the incident as he continues to get calls for contract terminations. Si Han knows this isn’t an accident and goes seek out Zhen Tian. Yin Zheng only gets word of Z & X’s arson incident while he’s in meeting. Yin Zheng also knows that Si Han will seek him out.
Si Han is an absolutely brilliant businessman and he immediately gets to work on pushing the marketing and PR aspects of his company. One morning, he gets a text from Zhang Xiao and it must be such a relief for him but he’s too busy with work to even spend time with her.
Lan Lan and Yin Zheng, on their way to dinner get trapped in the office elevator… and not only is Lan Lan troubled by the fireworks display from earlier, she’s also freaked out by small dark spaces. She’s plagued by her horrible memories of being raped by some guy when there were fireworks outside which is why she’s so terrified. Later, she’s seen cuddling in bed with Yin Zheng.
Zhang Xiao, in her own bed, seems to be having some trouble sleeping. When slumber finally takes over, she remembers herself as a child, rifling through a drawer, finding a single magnolia earring wrapped in a handkerchief. That morning as she delivers flowers to Lan Lan’s room, Zhang Xiao tells Lan Lan she’s seen the same earring, that she herself has one too. Zhang Xiao seems even more defensive than usual about herself which scares Zhang Xiao away.
Si Han is convinced that the perpetrator of the arson incident is somehow connected to Yin Zheng. Si Han finds out that most of his closest workers have also deferred over the Zhen Tian because Z & X is tanking. Even then, Si Han refuses their resignations so that they can leave on his word and go out with some a nice compensation package. The episode ends with Si Han gazing over the broken picture frame of him and his mother. He promises her that this won’t be the end of Z & X.
Zhang Xiao is found sitting in that towny restaurant that she last met with Si Han, waiting for him again, but he’s at home drowning his troubles in alcohol. Si Han texts her an address and she meets him in the burnt up Z & X store drinking some scotch. She says that she was originally a bit upset that there was no one to spend her birthday with her but now that she’s seen someone in a worse state, she’s not as unhappy anymore. He apologizes to her and they celebrate with cake.
Si Han is inspired to sell again and decides to sell the last of his Z & X products right on the street out the back of his car. The earnings aren’t bad. The next day, Si Han’s closest advisor decides to return to Z & X. His friend also brings news of another big company willing to do business with Z & X. However, another conflict arises when a girl returns to the Z& X stand claiming that their products gave her face a horrible rash. Back at the office, Kang Zhen Tian is practicing calligraphy and Yin Zheng is confidence Z & X will go under quite soon. Kang Zhen Tian can tell that Yin Zheng doesn’t really care about his brother’s reputation. The one character that Kang Zhen Tian’s been writing on his desk is “deception.”
Later, we see a bunch of workers moving everything out of the Z & X office. Si Han’s just a phone call letting him know that his resources are being withdrawn from the company because of the scandal with the products. His advisor is adamant that Si Han hasn’t done anything wrong but Si Han knows there’s nothing he can do about the present situation. Si Han suddenly gets another phone call of a company willing to inject two million dollars into the company. Si Han signs the deal with this new company and just after they sign the agreement, Kang Zhen Tian appears and Si Han is horrified to discover that he’s signed his company to do work with Zhen Tian. Si Han is bitter about his father because he was sent to London for schooling and he’s been alone for almost twenty years. Si Han says that since his mother passed away, his father’s never been there for him. Kang Zhen Tian caves and asks for a chance to make amends.
Si Han runs over everything that’s happened that day over his head, feeling like he’s been pushed into a corner.
Zhang Xiao continues to wait for her Black Kitty’s text while wondering who her mystery cafeteria dessert chef is. Both head into the kitchen to try and figure out who’s behind the sweets. Siyu and Ling Dan hide immediately… in the freezer (LOL). Every other chef seems tight-lipped about who’s been cooking around them and Huang Di wonders if it’s a ghost haha. When Zhang Xiao leaves to meet with Si Han, Huang Di sees Siyu and Ling Dan emerge from the freezer.
Zhang Xiao and Si Han talk in metaphors about life for a bit… Zhang Xiao asks, hypothetically, if Zhang Xiao was with a bunch of friends found themselves in a deserted place where they were about to starve to death. At this moment, a hunter appeared and struck a deal with them, that he would feed everyone and save them, but the condition was for Zhang Xiao’s hand in marriage, would she agree? Zhang Xiao answers cutely that it would depend on whether he was handsome or not. Si Han points out a rather average looking man as a reference and Zhang Xiao still agrees. She says that her father is a desert tour guide and he often tells her that when a sandstorm arises, he can’t bring himself to leave the group because his duty as a guide is to protect his team members, to bring them to the correct destination. After answering, Zhang Xiao asks Si Han for the meaning behind the question but we never get to see that part of the conversation while we flash out… to Siyu and Ling Dan who have tied Huang Di to a chair in the kitchen. They threaten him to keep quiet about this affair and he agrees (but who knows how tight-lipped he really is).
Si Han agrees to visit the big Kang House. Kang Zhen Tian is pretty smug about his son returning to the house. The current Mrs. Kang is really happy Si Han’s returned and hope he can talk more with his father. Si Han has only business on his mind. Regarding Kang Zhen Tian’s proposal earlier, Si Han agrees to return to the company… but he has three conditions.
1) After Z & X joins the Zhen Tian conglomerate, all its original members will remain. None are to be laid off nor demoted. Furthermore, the Z & X brand is not to be altered in any way. Kang Zhen Tian immediately agrees.
2) To relay clearly to the media that the financial difficulties of Z & X have nothing to do with the quality of their products. Kang Zhen Tian says that even if Si Han had not mentioned it, Kang himself would have saw to it.
3) Si Han’s agreement to work for Zhen Tian has nothing to do with family ties nor does it have anything to do with forgiving his father. Kang Zhen Tian also agrees after some quick thought.
Si Han immediately leaves upon agreement. Although Mrs. Kang invites him to stay in his old room, Si Han tells her that when he left the house and his room, he was ten. Now, he’s thirty-two and has no connections to that room anymore.
Back at the office, Yin Zheng and Kang Zhen Tian are holding a meeting with the company. Kang Zhen Tian introduces Si Han into the room. Yin Zheng looks pretty unimpressed with what’s taking place but Kang Zhen Tian is beaming from having both sons supporting his company now. Kang Zhen Tian tasks Yin Zheng with introducing Si Han to the works and the air is so tense you can almost see the electricity pass between the two men’s intense stares.
Now all our characters are more or less in the same place, literally in the same building. This will not only give Zhang Xiao and Si Han more chances to interact but also reveal Si Han’s true identity to Zhang Xiao (hopefully). The competition is literally officially starting between Yin Zheng and Si Han. I’m both excited and dreadful for the drama to come.
