This week’s episode turns to Balder (my tragic sweet baby). Zeus has currently made it winter at the academy. Since Balder has some destructive and tragic mythology behind him, you can try and imagine how his route goes… Balder tells Yui that his mother once made all of creation vow never to harm him out of fear for his death, which is why all things that mean him harm avoid him.
The group decides on a Christmas market at the cultural festival. As Yui, Tsukiyomi, Balder, Apollon and Dionysus work out the details of their plan, they decide to divide their markets based on mythology (since they’re all gods anyway). Balder seems a bit troubled by this because he doesn’t wish to be separated based on mythology. It seems that Balder is intensely infatuated with Yui already. Balder goes so far as to lie to the others to keep Yui around him.
Loki appears and interrupts the happy couple. Loki gets pretty jealous over this…
Fun fact: Balder’s last name, Hringhorni is taken after his ship, rumoured by legend to be the greatest ship ever built.
Loki is shocked that Balder shared a piece of his favourite meat with Yui and accuses Yui of enchanting Balder as a goddess. Loki finally finds out that Yui is a human… apparently he’s the only one who didn’t know. Loki seems even more hostile than ever to Yui now that he knows. After a montage of Loki troublemaking, all of it targeted to Yui, Balder finally gets serious about Yui and confronts him. Thor talks to Yui and gives her their back story; of how the gods ended up drawn to each other as children.
Balder tells Loki about her true feelings to Yui and I love the music that goes with the scenes here. Loki is incensed because the three of them promised to be together forever because they always did everything together. However, Balder recognizes that Thor and Loki have an even closer bond that excludes Balder.
Yui finds herself talking to Loki at the festival… although Yui talks about her special memories with the gods so far, Loki has… something else in mind but Yui is so dense and naïve that she takes his sexual predator hints as a happy greeting to be friends. HAHAHA this shocks Loki quite a bit and Balder ends up observing Yui’s happy expression as she chats with Loki.
Balder approaches Yui and asks her how she feels about him, accusing her of loving Loki. Balder gets pretty Yandere and attempts to kiss Yui. Luckily, Loki intervenes and stops him. Loki asserts that Balder belongs to Loki alone. OMG. DRAMA! I’m surprised Kamigami is getting into the dark side of Balder’s route but I guess shaving down the complexities of the route and turning it into possessive jealousy is one way of inserting it in the anime. I was also thoroughly surprised when the episode ended at a little cliff-hanger. I didn’t expect Balder’s little story to span longer than one episode because we have limited air time and Yui still needs to develop her feelings with the main guy – Apollon.
I think they made a pretty close call with packing all the Balder X Loki bromance + back story + Yui development all in one episode but like I said, we are short on time. I’m looking forward to seeing how Yui will sort of intervene and mediate the Balder X Loki conflict.
