We are FINALLY past the first introductory part of Mahouka. Though some of you might be a little lost on the magic system because of how little the anime explains things, hopefully a magic competition between schools will help better tease out the inner-workings of the system. Episode 8 starts off with a training session between the Shiba siblings and sensei in preparation for the upcoming competition. Miyuki will be entering the Mirage Bat and Ice Pillars tournaments.
Strangely, the school councillor Haruka Ono-san appears and randomly reveals that she’s a secret investigator for Public Safety and assigned to First High. This bit was randomly inserted but now at least we know who this woman is. Tatsuya calls her a BS magician (no I don’t think it stands for bullshit magician)… BS means “Born Specialized” which means that although the magician is really skilled at one area, he or she is not adept at other areas of magic meaning that they are superbly specialized in one thing.
We are introduced to Mikihiko, a childhood friend of Erika’s. Honestly, he looks like Tatsuya with his hair trimmed down. Quite a bit of filler dialogue takes place after the sudden introduction of another side character. Then we jump into the student council room who’s addressing an engineer shortage on the technical magic team for the competition. I wonder if Tatsuya got up to leave because he wanted to sneak out before they remembered his amazing engineer skills or the fact that he was insulted no one noticed him sooner haha. Probably the former because he doesn’t ever get worked up about anything except anything regarding Miyuki.
A-Chan continues to fangirl over Taurus Silver, the amazing engineer who created Tatsuya’s weapons. (If you want to know Taurus Silver’s true identity, read ahead in the light novel translations)
More about the three big puzzles of weight based magic are brought into discussion. The first regards the gravity controlled thermonuclear fusion reactor (the puzzle that Tatsuya wants to solve), the second is actualizing a quasi-perpetual motion machine based on infinite inertial expansion (which is basically finding a method to keep energy flow perpetual so it never has to be refuelled since energy slowly diminished as it’s converted from potential to kinetic) and the third is general purpose sustained flying because flying requires four different spells. Naturally A-China is confuzzled over her theories.
Later Tatsuya is recruited into the technical team and AGAIN he has to prove his skills. Anyone who’s a Bloom is pretty annoyed that a Weed has infiltrated their elite ranks. It’s getting a bit tiring to be honest.
That night, Tatsuya is having a top secret meeting with his general. Tatsuya is addressed as a “Special Officer” and well, Tatsuya’s mysterious background is brought up once more. The Hong Kong crime syndicate “No-Head Dragons” are brought up (horrible name)…
At the end of the episode, Tatsuya’s successfully figured out how to fly, continuously. Wow, Miyuki almost looks like a fairy in her Mirage Bat costume when she flies and floats around the room to test out Tatsuya’s spells. The last moment when Tatsuya gazes up at his sister is pretty sweet.
As I continue to review Mahouka I will try to offer some explanations for the tidbits that they leave out in the plot or the mechanics of the magic. Hopefully it will make things less confusing for you guys…
