We finally find out the mystery man, or rather – men, in this case regarding Tatsuya’s weapons. Taurus Silver, the legendary engineering genius actually consists of two men – the technician who is Taurus and Tatsuya who is Silver. Tatsuya (with Miyuki tagging along) goes to the lab to test out the flying device. I was generally surprised with how much safety equipment was required with the actual testers even though Miyuki seemed to use it with ease. Wow, it seems like it was mostly a success but now the issue is one of stress of psion waves on the physical body.
Everyone at the technical facility addresses both the siblings with respect, when it comes to the Yotsuba family, they view Tatsuya as a mere bodyguard to Miyuki (their expected heir). Miyuki is seriously not happy when the Butler Aoki disrespects her brother. Tatsuya brings up some family tidbits. When Tatsuya said his Mother “made” this bogus magician, there’s more of a back story behind that, as well as the fact that Tatsuya says that he doesn’t have a “heart capable of hatred” Those scenes had quite a bit of back story quickly crammed into the dialogue and really none of it makes sense unless you read the light novel to get the full force of Tatsuya’s inner thoughts as well as the back story of the siblings.
Tatsuya and some other students are made “engineers” (for the upcoming Nine Schools compettion). Tatsuya is assigned to a group of girls (amongst them are Honoka, Shizuku and Miyuki).
In another scene, we get a random scene of Mizuki noticing something strange. She takes off her glasses and her amazing sight allows her to glimpse this strange magical energy seeping out from the school. She wanders into the medical experiment corridors… She catches Mikiiko doing some water spirit spell. Mikihiko is totally enthralled with Mizuki when he realizes she can see colours in psion waves (HOW CUTE! I ship them!!) Mikihiko can manipulate spirits according to colour but like most magicians, interpret their magic through vibrations and can’t actually see them visually. Mikihiko says that Miyuki has “Crystal Eyes.”
On the day of the Nine Schools Competition move-out trip, President Saegusa ends up being an hour late and even after she tries to flirt with him in her casual clothes he’s COMPLETELY IMMUNE TO IT hahahahah. This was pretty amusing. If anything, there is something between Hanzo and Saegusa… he seems pretty flustered when he spots her in a casual dress on the bus. Saying that President Saegusa is only “stressed” is a definite understatement considering how family background, her magic ability and her position on student council – not to mention the crazy expectations that the upper elites have on her. Again, not mentioned but stated clearly in the light novel. Next to Disciplinary Committee Mari is a girl named Kanon whose fiancée is apparently on the technicians’ bus… I really wish there was more explanations here because there is a huge chunk in the light novel talking about the family backgrounds of the “Hundred Families” which are families of noble magicians that do not belong to the Ten Master Clans but are extremely significant nonetheless.
Somewhere. Randomly. An accident takes place and in a matter of seconds the car is burning in flames and skidding towards the technicians’ bus… ooooh cliffhanger. Okay, well it’s not much of a cliffhanger because the magicians will obviously find a way to stop the incident with some form of magic or other – it’ll just depend on who…
They breezed through like two-three chapters of the Nine Schools Competition arc in the light novel and only offered about 10% of the explanations of the overall magic systems and the back story material. They are really jumping miles in the light novel with the anime and it’s not necessarily a good thing. I’ll keep trying to fill in some of the blanks here in my review and hopefully that will give more perspective on the story (without sudden spoilers) – I have a feeling the anime relocated all the family info and back story somewhere farther into the anime so that it makes for a bigger mystery reveal.
In any case, the Nine Schools Competition should get pretty interesting. Obviously that accident wasn’t an actual “accident’ which means things will stir up soon…
