“Superiority among magicians isn’t decided solely by the power of the magic skills, huh?”
Hey guys, today we pick up with Mahouka where we left off right before a flaming truck was about to slam into the van containing all magicians team. The incident ends with a spell from Miyuki and one from Juumonji to ice off and halt the van. Of course, all the spells cast in a panic by supporting characters were “mysteriously” put out. Miyuki’s own inner narrative mention it was her brother using Gram Dispersion – basically, a spell that counters and cancels other spells. Shown in the anime but not explained again.
The Shiba siblings and the other students arrive at the tournament center. Kirihara and Hanzo talk… Kirihar poins out that the siblings are pretty… unique. A banquet will take place to night and I really enjoyed seeing the different school uniforms in different designs and colour schemes but it is beyond me as to why the dress code at a banquet is school uniforms. Also, the random dialogue and banter between the siblings and the other characters can add so much unnecessary filler to the story. However, Erika does mention that she and Mikihiko ended up at the tournament facilities to help out because of their families…
Since the light novel is told from Tatsuya’s point of view and a lot of the narrative in the light novel tells his inner thoughts, the anime shaves off much of his character development in that respect. Erika points out Tatsuya for being cold and she points out that it’s because that Tatsuya is cold that Erika can blab off to him and not worry about him pitying or offering sympathy. She thanks him afterward and leaves. Lol… awkward exchange.
Miyuki is at the center of attention again at the banquet gazing longingly at her brother LOLL Masaki, the Crimson Prince is also at the banquet and Miyuki catches his eye as well…
The Patriarch of the Ten Master Clans appears to make a speech. Tatsuya notices a sweep of sensory interference magic of the hall. The Patriarch glimpses Tatsuya in the crowd and acknowledges him. The Patriarch mentions that the spell was a little trick of his but he knows only five of them noticed it. If terrorists suddenly attacked them only five of them would be able to stop the attacker. I guess he starts off by keeping the students humble with their magics. The girls head down to a hot spring and we get many fun fan service scenes. Even the girls are mesmerized by Miyuki.
Miyuki claims to have never thought of her brother as a love interest but all the viewers and audience are like USOTSUKI!!!!!
That night, Mikihko is practising his magic and spots some evil powers adrift… he struggles with indecision to pursue the troublemakers because he “lost his magic a year ago” He finally decides to chase after them but just as he catches up to them, the terrorists have already been taken down by Tatsuya… Episode ends there at another strange cliff-hanger-ish point.
I’m not sure how I feel about the pacing in each of the Mahouka epsiodes. Every episode should have a rise and fall of plot, climax and cliffhanger or resolution but Mahouka just mulls along at its own pace and does whatever it wants every episode. Honestly everything in this episode could have been shortened into the first 10-15 minutes and the story really could have gone faster. Episode 10 could have progressed to a better end by wrapping up with the morning of the tournament perhaps… Hopefully when the tournament officially starts there will be much more excitement and magic to be seen.
