Hey guys I am super super excited today to introduce a bunch of new anime and returning anime for the summer season. There are SO many great shows and so much I want to cover. There are just my highlights for what I’m highly anticipating. As usual, my tastes lean towards a bit more shojo-styled animation when it comes to anime, the production company and the casts are a big deal to me. In this season’s listing I will be checking out a lot of slice of life, lots of shojo romance, some fantasy-magic themed shows and a bit of boys love. Naturally, what I’ve listed isn’t only what’s out there but I have meticulously gone through every show to check out the pvs and summaries beforehand. Theses are my choices but if you don’t see your favourite here, leave a comment and I will definitely check that out for a first impressions review. Now, without further ado…
Glasslip- Produced by P.A. Works, Glasslip follows a seventeen year old girl named Touko Fukami (voiced by Seria Fukugawa) from the Fukui prefecture whose dream is to be a glass artisan. This slice of life story takes place in the summer with five other students. As a P.A. works original, the series will also feature the voices of Saori Hiyami, Risa Taneda, Ryota Ohsaka, Nobunaga Shimazaki and Daiki Yamashita. The anime in the promotional video looks gorgeous, the characters on first glance seem quirky and fun. Fans of Nagi no Asakura will probably enjoy this familiar animation style. Release Date: July 3, 2014
Kantai Collection- aka KanColle, this online battle card game and all its adorable moe- girls are finally being animated. The show is done by Studio Diomedea who previously produced Noucome and Akuma no Riddle. There will be a pretty huge cast of girls reprising their roles in the game but other than the blatant fan service, I wonder how much plot there actually will be… Release Date: TBA
Majimoji Rurumo- The premise of the story and the vibrant promotional poster art caught my attention for this series. Kouta Shibaki (voiced by Makoto Takahashi) is a normal high-school boy who is pretty obsessed with girls… the only problem is girls avoid him due to his reputation as a pervert. One day when he stumbles upon a strange book in the library, he ends up summoning a witch named Rurumo Maji Mojiruka (voiced by Suzuko Mimori) who promises to grant him a wish in exchange for his soul… but Rurumo ends up refusing to take his soul which knocks her out of the good ranks amongst the demons. Now the real story begins with Rurumo trying to figure out how to become a witch again with Shibaki’s help. This series falls in the comedy, fantasy and shonen categories with 42 chapters in the manga that finished in 2010. Release Date: July 9, 2014
Bakumatsu Rock- I got recommend by a really good friend to check this one out. The story blends shoguns in the Bakumatsu era with idols and music to keep political order. If you are a seiyuu fan, the show stars the voices of Toshiyuki Morikawa, Showtaro Morikubo, Kensho Ono, Kishou Taniyama and Tatsuhisa Suzuki (YAYYYYYYYY) The main cast should all be singing the main theme song and I’m very interested to see how the animation art will turn out because of the vibrant and harsh colours on the promotional poster. Release Date: July 2, 2014
Shounen Hollywood: Holly Stage for 49- Another exciting recommendation by a fellow fangirl friend. Adapted from a novel, this anime follows a bunch of members of the idol group “Shonen Hollywood” and how they develop their work relationships and talents in a slice of life setting. This anime is another great one for seiyuu fans with the voices of Ryota Ohsaka, Tetsuya Kakihara, Daiki Yamashita, Shouta Aoi (KYAAAA) an Kensho Ono. Release Date: July 6, 2014
Anime I’ve Read the Manga/Played the Game/Know About…
Ao Haru Ride- I am very excited to see a series by my favourite mangaka, Io Sakisaka, get an anime. Ao Haru Ride tells a lovely high school love story from Futaba Yoshioka’s perspective and how she comes to reconcile her feelings for a boy she use to like in junior high, a boy named Kou Tanaka. Check out my Ao Haru Ride first impressions here. If you’re into the shojo genre, this series is definitely up your alley. Not only will it tell Futaba and Kou’s story, but will also delve into other supporting characters’ relationships and explore a few variations and meanings of high school love. Release Date: July 7, 2014
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Crystal- Do I even need to introduce this one? A regular girl named Usagi Tsukino becomes Sailor Moon, a magic girl who fights evil by moonlight and wins love by daylight. Brought to you by Touhei Animation, the newly released character designs plus the revamped animation will echo the mangaka’s original art style. The show will run for 26 episodes so diehard fans definitely won’t want to miss this. Release Date: July 5, 2014
DRAMAtical Murder- A lovely yaoi visual novel is being animated into a lovely yaoi anime this season. Dramatical Murder follows a boy named Aoba, a pretty regular boy who works a pretty regular junk shop. In this futuristic world, he ends up getting pulled into a virtual game called Rhyme where people possess “AllMates” (AI computers). The game and anime are in the mystery, sci-fi- psychological and of course, yaoi genre. Produced by Studio NAZ, fans of the game will be very excited to see their favourite characters on screen. The visuals in the promotional video look pretty solid and close to the original style of the game. Release Date: July 7, 2014
Kuroshitsuji: Book of Circus- Ever since I read the Black Butler manga I have been in love with the story, the characters and the art. Season 1 was fine and I was excited to see a season 2. I don’t say this a lot because it sounds harsh, but season 2 of Black Butler was seriously a piece of crap… which brings us to the new anime adaptation of part of the Black Butler manga, specifically the Noah’s Ark Circus arc where Ciel and Sebastian are investigating the disappearance of children. Animated by A-1 pictures with all cast reprising their roles I have hope for this new adaptation will do justice to Yana Tobaso’s amazingly detailed and gorgeous manga art style. Release Date: July 11, 2014
Love Stage!!- Here is another lovely yaoi anime for fans of the Love Stage manga. The story follows a boy named Sena Izumi, an otaku college student who is totally boring and average compared to his superstar family. Although he is currently working to be a mangaka, he ends up acting in a commercial he can’t turn down and reunites with Ichijou Ryouma… someone he once knew ten years ago…
Personally I couldn’t really get into Zaou Taishi’s art style after a few chapters even though the story sounds pretty intriguing. The manga is still ongoing so the anime will probably cover the first set of released chapters. As much as I love bishounen boys, Love Stage just isn’t for me but if you’re looking for a fun and light yaoi series to watch, check this out my fujoshi friends. Release Date: July 10, 2014
Returning Reviews for Season 2
Free! Eternal Summer- Free is returning for another season baby dolphins and it’s time to get your screams on because Kyoto Animation is back with more sparklies sport, more abs swimming and man service plot. Okay, to be honest the promotional stuff that’s been circling the internet tells us they’re going to go a bit deeper into both Makoto and Nagisa’s stories (less smileys, more feels?) and two-three new characters will be introduced. Release Date: July 3, 2014
Fate Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya 2wei- YAY MORE FATE! My magic girl senses are tingling. I watched KALMIA last summer as one of the very first episode by episode full series anime that I reviewed and now I’m super excited to be back with season 2. This time, the story takes place a month after the events of season 1 where all the class cards have been collected. We will be introduced to a new character throughout the series and Illya will return to magic girl life when she is called to use her powers and subdue the strange pulsations and magic fluctuations of the area. Release Date: July 10, 2014
Re: Hamatora- When the first season of Hamatora came up, I was reviewing too many series to go episode by episode which is why I ended up doing a full series review at the end. Bad move because… THAT ENDING GAH! The ending in season one was a major flip desk rage quit cliff-hanger. Luckily season 2 will answer many of the unfinished plot strands from season 1. Season two’s tagline says, “We don’t need Minimum.” DAYUM.
For those of you who don’t know, Hamatora is a supernatural mystery sort of anime that follows certain individuals who have “Minimums” – basically Minimum-Holders have very special abilities and society hones in on these individuals to train them. The disparity between the minimum-haves and minimum-have-nots causes a lot of social problems and a power struggle emerges in season 1 between the protagonists and one main crazy psycho antagonist. If you haven’t watched the fisrt season, AVOID season 2 because you’ll be hella confused. Instead I would advise you to wait for season 2 to finish and watch it all at once. Avoid the internet for spoilers though… Release Date: July 8, 2014
Sword Art Online II: Gun Game Online- A-1 Pictures I back with more MMORPG SAO for all you gamer SAO fans. After the train wreck in Alfheim Online, things seem to be good for a fresh start in a new world and new game following a new plot. This time Kirito is playing Gun Game Online and is tasked to investigate the connection between deaths in the game and real world. A new character named Shino Asada is introduced. Sadly it doesn’t seem like we will be seeing much of Asuna. I’m sure a lot of people will watch GGO to see if it’ll crash and burn against but I’m willing to give it a fair fighting chance because we are going with an entirely new premise here. Release Date: July 5, 2014
So these are all my summer season picks and I will be doing first impressions for all of these and perhaps some others if I get recommendations from anyone. As always, a poll will go up in one or two weeks with an update of what I will be officially following for the season (trust me, there will be a lot of reviews this season). Some shows will be reviewed on my channel while others will be given blog reviews + screenshots. Tweet or comment what you’re looking forward to, what you love, what you hate and I will talk to you all soon!
What are you pondering today?
