NOW THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKIN ABOUT. MAHOUKA TOTALLY KICKED ASS THIS WEEK!
We are at the eight day of the Nine Schools Competitions and the rookie match for monolith code is just about starting between First and Third High. To be honest I totally forgot this was the ROOKIE MATCH of monolith code because Masaki and Tatsuya are NOT Rookies AT ALL whether it’s as magic students or combatants on the battlefield. Masaki is extremely talented and powerful to the point where he views battle with a relaxed grin and easy-going mindset. Tatsuya in opposition is gifted with unique abilities, is cool and extremely calculating down to even what his teammates wear into battle. Masaki’s direct and upfront combat style forced Tatsuya to showcase a number of abilities unique only to a handful of individuals on this earth.
Let’s talk about what happened.
Mahouka has been seriously holding out on us because the action in this series is FANTASTIC. They really need to put more of those intense camera angles into the usual storytelling. If you haven’t read the light novels, there are only implied explanations but not direct dialogue answers. Leo and Mikihiko were wearing two ridiculously large black cloaks into the competition with magic circles and sequences altered into the structure of the fabrics in only two hours. Cardinal George of course is the first to notice this as he goes head to head with Mikihiko. As Masaki advances more aggressively on Tatsuya with invisible air bullets, Tatsuya is forced to use Elemental Sight to predict where the activation sequences are targeted in order to destroy the spell before it can attack him.
In the end, Tatsuya almost ambushes Masaki and in haste, Masaki forgets to dial back the force of his attack. Tatsuya takes down all but two of the remaining attack spells and ends up being hit in the explosion. Any NORMAL magician would have died. Masaki’s attack was in clear violation of the rules. (Guess he doesn’t know his own strength). When Tatsuya is hit, he should technically have been killed but Tatsuya can actually cast a spell called “Self-Restoration” which basically assesses and instantly heals his body back to its original state. When Tatsuya finger-snapped in Masaki’s ear; that was Flash Cast, another very difficult skill that Tatsuya is capable of. Since CADs are essentially technological mediums that process magic sequences of numbers and letters to activate spells, theoretically if one could memorize an entire set of figures in the sequence, he could probably execute a spell without a CAD. The two observers, clearly in on the government departments with their magical experiments notice that it was too much to use a low-grade CAD against someone like the Crimson Prince. They mention some experiments hinting that Tatsuya was experimented on (and he was… Tatsuya’s experiments are also closely linked to his family back story and his close relationship with his sister.)
Miyuki is probably the only one that was TRULY worried about Tatsuya because she probably knows exactly what her brother had to do in the heat of the moment and just how close Tatsuya was to death. I love the last shot when Tatsuya just gazes up at the crowd at Miyuki. I really expected Miyuki to just run down to the ring and launch herself into her onii-sama’s arms but the meaningful stare was really emotional too. Man the way Tatsuya looks at Miyuki…
This week’s episode of Mahouka just rekindled my love for the series. I would probably be okay with the series turning into a magical political war and seeing Tatsuya and Masaki on the battlefield for real versus all this holding-back-hiding-abilities stuff going on in the high school setting because, well… it’s high school. I can’t wait to see Miyuki’s Mirage Bat competition and perhaps the finals of the Monolith Code competition.
What are you pondering today?
