Ao Haru Ride Episode 4 Review

Ao Haru Ride Episode 4 (23)

This week’s episode of Ao Haru Ride follows Futaba and her friends on a leadership trip with a bunch of the school’s other class representatives. She and Kou end up being left behind by the school’s bus due to late showers, forgotten bags and wrong trains. They end up mostly together for the first part of the episode. The new main group of friends is still pretty tense. Murao doesn’t like how Kou causes his brother trouble because she has a crush on him. Kominato-kun isn’t happy when Murao isn’t happy because he has a crush on her and Makita isn’t happy with Kominato-kun because HE STOLE HER CUPCAKE. LOL

What I was looking forward to most in this episode was the moment when Kou and Futaba talk at night with their heads on the table. They end up turning towards each other at the same time after Kou comforts Futaba about her depressed mood. I liked how the manga executed this moment more because it was more of a slow and emotional build-up rather than sudden snap-quick shock for the characters. What you’ll notice about Kou and Futaba is that they unconsciously or on impulse become very affectionate or intimate with one another even though they’re not technically “dating” and often what’ll ruin the moment between them is either Kou’s bluntness or Futaba’s indecision about her feelings for Kou of the past versus Kou of the present.

Kou can probably read Futaba from a book which is why the story is never told from his perspective but I really admire Futaba’s persistence when it comes to understanding Kou or trying to smooth things out between her and the class representatives. I really hope we get to hear more of the amazing soundtrack. We can definitely look forward to more Kou X Futaba moments on the school trip… and how cute is it that Futaba calls Kou by his first name?
