Kuroshitsuji: Book of Circus Episode 4 Review

Kuroshitsuji Book of Circus Episode 4 (19)

I really think it’s in episode four of Black Butler’s Book of Circus that you get to see the animation shine reflected in the dark plot. It takes a lot of great directing and cinematography to perfectly cast lighting to evoke the perfect suspense and tension. Because most of this adaptation takes place in the circus, in Victorian England no less, the circus comes off as both whimsical at times and creepy at others. Paired with the perfect background music, it just pulls you directly into the story.

Ciel and Sebastian are officially separated behind the scenes when Sebastian ends up bunking with William while Ciel is stuck with another circus trooper. Things with the Joker are getting darker. I honestly think Mamoru Miyano is THE BEST Joker they could have cast omg.

We do find out that the circus is really responsible for the little girls’ kidnappings. DAYUM I don’t see Mamoru Miyano get into super dark and murderous characters very often. Somehow the circus troops draw the little girls into a trance and lead them away.

Dang, Sebastian does not hold back when he’s ordered to “leave Ciel alone” and Ciel does not fare well with regular every day chores. Heck, the little lord has problems dressing himself in the morning and he can barely fend for himself when it comes to barging past crowds for food. I almost want to give Ciel a hug because of how freaked out he is when it comes to roughing it. I’m still pretty impressed with how Sebastian resolves to take care of his little lord and “encourage” him when Ciel gets discouraged. After a while in the manga when you’ve read Ciel and Sebastian’s exchanges for quite a few arcs, you’ll notice more and more just how ruthless Ciel is willing to be to get his revenge and how coldly and harshly he views the world – in that respect, he’s pretty similar to Sebastian, a demon.

I’m really like the Book of Circus anime adaptation. Due to the splendid directing, even the most mundane events seem to unravel at a fair and purposeful pace. Perhaps it might be my bias towards the characters though haha. I don’t think I will ever get tired of the opening or ending songs…

I hope you guys are enjoying the series as much as I am! Thanks so much for reading!
