Okay so maybe today’s episode wasn’t as exciting in the magic-action department but it definitely had its interesting quirks especially when it comes to the side characters and all the canon romance that’s going on.
There are five episodes until the end of Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei and they certainly do not seemed in a hurry to build up details in the Yokohama Distubance arc. The thesis competiton preparations are going smoothly and at first it didn’t seem like such a high profile project but with all the other extra-curricular festival activities taking place there is even an entire Protective Defense Guard under Juumonji.
I loved the additional side character scenes in this episode because quite a few of them are extremely interesting characters on their own. They just don’t get enough spotlight in the main story and even when they do, they are usually outshined by Tatsuya’s crazy OP-ed magic style. We got to see a bit of Mibu and Kirihara back in their regular high school life, which I really enjoyed because we sort of lost them after the very first arc.
The chibi saboteur who was initially spying on the Thesis project team was really trying to target Tatsuya. Apparently she was told (by some shady evil magic guys) that Tatsuya could have foreseen the malfunctions in her sister’s CAD before the mirage bat competition. Chiaki’s older sister, Koharu, was the one who fell and injured herself in the mirage bat competition and although Tatsuya could have seen the glitches in her CAD, it wasn’t necessarily his responsibility take care of Koharu. Besides, Tatsuya had more to worry about regarding Miyuki’s safety and such.
My favourite scenes were probably the Leo X Erika ones where Erika decides to train Leo and teach him a signature trump card. Erika seems to be foreseeing more trouble headed their way and has decided to help Leo hone his potential to be a better magician and fighter. I really like their friendship dynamic. Even they sort of have this hate-love thing going on their personalities complement each other’s very well and it would be nice to see them actually pair up.
Again, there are a bunch of mini snippets interspersed in the episode between the high school scenes that hint at the darker side of the story. There are so many details on the magic alliances and other factions all outside the high school environment that the story does not allude to which often makes the sudden external interferences seem awkward and out of place. Mahouka is juggling quite a bit with the storytelling from Tatsuya’s perspective to regular third person perspective, to all-knowing perspective and it all somehow ends up scattered in the episode. For now, I think we’re all just waiting for the action to start up again in the “disturbance” part of the arc and anticipating how the show will wrap itself up by the twenty-sixth episode.
What are you pondering today?
