SOUSUKE CAUSING ME SO MUCH PAIN THIS SEASON. HNNNGGG WHYYYYYYYYY. CRAZY TURNING POINT EPISODE OHMIGOSH.
Thanks for more adorable flashback scenes KyotoAni. It turns out that Sousuke is pretty individually driven and he’s not generally into relays because he doesn’t want to be dragged down by those who’ll lose or have to “share” the victory if they win. Perhaps it’s just a part of his personality. Sousuke becomes such a three-dimensional character after this week’s episode and not only do we flush out his personality, we also get tons of great scenes with the other characters.
Wow. Middle school Sousuke is already pretty stoic and cute… and Sousuke and Rin’s friendship is just too fun. I sort of love it a lot more than Haru and Rin’s best friendship just because both of them are so competitive and outgoing that they end up pushing each other forward not only in the big things but also the small things. The only wedge between them is the fact that their opinions differ when it comes to relays and teamwork.
I JUST WANT TO GIVE SOUSUKE A HUG.
When Rin tosses Sousuke a drink to kind of test his shoulder, Sousuke can’t even lift his arm to catch it and his injury has just gotten so bad… Sousuke explains that the injury happened two years ago from over-training and that he’d lied about being scouted and his university. UGHHHH THAT BOY NEEDS A HUG… when Rin and Sousuke have their talk outside, Haru ends up overhearing…
Rin asks Sousuke why Sousuke returned to Samezuka. Because Sousuke’s always seen Rin as his rival and both are super driven in swimming, Sousuke’s been working super hard just to get to the international level with Rin one day. DAYUM. OMG. THIS EPISODE. Although it is kind of Sousuke’s fault that his injury got this worse without giving it time to heal, I feel SO BAD FOR HIM. It’s taken him quite a while to recuperate and with his impatience, he eventually decided on giving up on swimming because he thought he’d fallen too behind to catch up. This just UTTERLY SHOCKS RIN AND HARU (more so for Haru probably).
YOU CAN’T NOT LOVE SOUSUKE AFTER THIS WOUNDED BACK STORY.
Episode ten did a great job at tying in season 1 with 2 because while Sousuke was narrating his back story, you got to see some shots of season 1 where Rin lost to Haru at one of the preliminary swim meets. Sousuke was completely shaken by Rin’s behaviour. Sousuke was also there at the final relay with Rin and the other Iwatobi boys and became re-inspired by Rin. Somehow just as Rin’s swimming drive is largely inspired by Haru, Sousuke’s drive is largely inspired by Rin. He decided he wanted to truly become Rin’s friend before he quiet swimming. Rin all caught up in the moment grabs another guy’s collar again (refer to season 1 first) AND DAMMIT RIN YOU CRY SO MUCH ITS TOO CUTE. Haru gets up to leave his hiding place just as OHMIGOD THE SHIP IS SO STRONG BETWEEN RIN AND SOUSUKE.
Sousuke still wants to swim in the relay despite his condition and if he pushes himself too far, he won’t ever be able to swim again. Sousuke is totally chill and fine with this. He actually looks a ot more lighthearted after getting this out all in the open. His expression when he wants to swim, THAT EXPRESSION. Sousuke is really making a good case against my favourite top tiered fangirl crushes. The “A sight we’ve never seen before” line comes up again with Rin and brings his character brilliantly full circle in season 2. ANOTHER GREAT MOMENT.
Wow Haru just blabs Sousuke’s wish out loud to his team (which is awkward) but all the boys end up being inspired by Sousuke’s dream so they really decide to give it their all. I LOVE THE BACK AND FORTH CHARACTER BANTER BEFORE THE FINAL RELAY OHMIGOD. BEST LINES EVER and they really reflect the energy and intensity of this race. I loved seeing the actual racing and all the commentary to go with it.
LOVED SEIJUROU’S MOMENT IN THE EPISODE WHERE HE GOADS ON THE TEAM TO CHEER. WHOOO BEST (EX) CAPTAIN EVER!!!
Sousuke’s shoulder does act up in the middle of his race and he LITERALLY ALMOST DROWNS FROM THE PAIN BUT DECIDES TO PUSH ON OHMIGOSH. THIS GETS TOO INTENSE. EVEN FOR SWIMMING. ADRENALINE CAN REALLY PUSH A MAN.
Last leg depends on Haru and Rin of course and once again we get an epic freestyle race where Rin and Haru are just NECK IN NECK AND… HARU WINS. I can’t imagine how hard it was for the writers to choose between Rin and Haru taking into account character roles, storyline AND fan/audience reception… As a result, the Iwatobi swim team will be going to nationals (which I guess is what the last two episodes will amount to).
Rin turns out to be a great captain and Momo is just ADORABLE when he group hugs his teammates. I LOVE SEEING SOUSUKE FINALLY SMILE AFTER ALL THAT ANGST OHMIGOSH.
We didn’t have time for another Haru-reflecting-in-the-water epiphany but Sousuke’s resolved his issue and GOSH HE’S EVEN MORE CUTE WHEN HE’S NICE.
The episode ends with Rin and Sousuke staring out at the pool. OHMIGOD. BEST EPISODE EVER. QIGOPEHQIGEPEWIGEHO I COULD BARELY BREATHE.
