High school harem group + superpowers = Inou Battle wa Nichijou no Naka de.
I feel like I’m watching this just to find out what random scenarios this character group can get into. It almost seems like all the characters are playing a pretend game of superheroes… BUT ITS ENTERTAINING.
Everything starts off with a super thinly framed anime prologue in which our characters get their superpowers. Right after the dramatic blast of light changing superpower magic… the characters go back to their regular school day lives in the literature club.
The “Superpower Check-up” is probably the most interesting part of this episode because we get to see all the characters unleash their powers. FRIGGING JURI BREAKS THE FOURTH WALL TO NARRATE TO THE AUDIENCE. Our protagonist is Jurai Andou, an overly dramatic “hero type” who literally aspires to be the main hero within the group. He’s like the main source of exaggeration in the main scenes and… his uniform is emblazoned with um, magic seals? He ends up fighting an evil villain student council president Mirei Kudou in this episode. I can’t take Nobuhiko Okamoto seriously. I love him as a seiyuu but he’s just too hilarious and random in this show hahaha
For the other girls, we have the imposing and serious Sayumi Takanashi voiced by Risa Taneda who has the power to restore anything she touches to its “original state.” It’s really vague but… don’t worry about it, it gives each of the girls a new makeover sooooo it… has… every-day… purposes? Maybe? Tomoyo Kanzaki, voiced by Haruka Yamazaki, has the power to stop, slow down or fast-forward time. Comes in handy when Jurai gets his ass into dangerous situations. The quiet and polite but destructive Hatoko Kushikawa voiced by Sayori Hayami has the ability to manipulate ALL FIVE ELEMENTS. But as if that wasn’t OP (over-powered) enough, our resident Loli, Chifuyu Himeki voiced by Nanani Yamashita can basically create ANYTHING. Her power goes beyond physics, time and space. If that girl can imagine it, she can MAKE IT. How godly.
It all almost seems like a parody of supernatural-superpowers high school shows that we get in regular anime series. In fact, they DEFINITELY poke fun at the dramatic superpower shows. For one thing, the main character’s superpower is a useless glowing ball of (dark) light. The other thing is when the villain is delivering her intentions-revealing monologue, Tomoyo actually points out that she basically revealed what she’s going to do so the main characters are gonna NOT walk right into that trap LOL. Well, the writers try to string SOME sense into the plot near the end of the episode but it comes off as a pretty weak way to justify all the randomness that’s just happened in the show. The main crux of the show’s intention is to find out who’s “awakening” the powers of the students in the school… I guess. Don’t know where this show’s gonna go to be honest…
The Loli is super cute though. So… I guess I’ll keep watching. If anything, this show will provide some entertaining comedy in a very sci-fi-filled season.
