“You can’t protect anything if you only see what’s convenient.” – Tenka Kumo
I really think the second episode of Donten ni Warau did a great of pushing the plot forward and revealing the bigger overarching conflict with the story. This episode focuses a lot more on Tenka’s point of view and the things he does to keep his brothers and his friends protected. While I did mention in my last review how Soramaru has the most potential as a character because of all his teenage angst and jumbled up memories, Tenka still remains as the most interesting character in the story in my opinion (well, at least at the moment).
We also find out that the freeloading Shirasu Kinjou is actually a member of the Fuma shinobi, a clan with a murderous and bloody history. Tenka doesn’t really see it as a problem though and continues to treat Shirasu as his close friend. Shirasu, while claiming that he does things for his own motivaations or with no reason at all, seems really attached to Tenka. This is best seen in the moment when Shirasu jumps into the fray to save Soramaru and Chutarou from one of the criminal swordsmen, Naoto Kagami.
As easygoing as Tenka seems to be on a regular basis, he can get REALLY SCARY in battle and he is actually really really strong. Not only can he take out a bunch of ragtag criminals on his own, he’s also capable of holding his own against actual trained military soldiers. His strength and skill however is attributed to the fact that he was once a member of the Yamainu. Seems like he chose his family over the military, as he prioritizes his brothers’ safety and wellbeing above all else.
All the characters we see in this episode, whether main or supporting are all working towards a common goal… for themselves. Tenka, the Yamainu and even the criminals are trying to find the “vessel” that houses Orochi (the Great Snake). Kagami’s brief criminal appearance does reveal a lot about the political landscape of this period. Due to the edict that abolished swords, many disenfranchised samurai and swordsmen turned to crime and revenge. This is largely the reason why the huge Gokumomjo prison was created.
Favourite moment: When Tenka jumps into the battle to help Shirasu deflect Kagami’s attack.
I’m surprised we don’t have time for proper credits because we see Tenka approach Botan in regards to the Orochi vessel. Whereas Tenka wants to protect it, Sousei Abeno wants to destroy it. Wow, I almost didn’t recognize Kosuke Toriumi’s voice in Sousei’s character because I always hear him use his higher voice in other shows. This show is just brimming with talented seiyuus and with all the plot hints being dropped, I’m excited to see more of Donten ni Warau next week.
