Wow I am really impressed with how Ufotable has portrayed Shiro in this anime adaptation. While he’s still has some of the “heroic” traits of the original Fate route, this Shiro is much more grounded and probably a lot more level-headed.
The Archer-Shiro interactions are so amusing to watch. As well, they lend insight into Archer’s characters and right at the beginning of the episode we here Archer tell Shiro that he has all his wishes fulfilled, died and became a Heroic Spirit. Now, he’s just a tool used by humans as a means to an end. It certainly gives us a starkly different perspective to the ideals that Saber holds dear. Looks like memories of his past life are turning.
“How would you feel if you died with unfinished business, only to find yourself brought back by a human to do their bidding? All in the name of seeking the Grail…” – Archer
The aggressions is amped up when Shinji and Shiro but heads at the school. Goodness, Shinji is such a creep… but he has the best seiyuu ever. Kamiya Hiroshi-sama makes Shinji a little less than detestable I suppose LOL
Shiro and Rin team up to weed out the Master who is allowing his servant to drain the mana of fellow students. Shinji ends up pinning Shiro as the de-activator of the sigils even though most of it is Rin’s work. Shinji offers Shiro an alliance of sorts but Shiro refuses. Right around this time, Shiro also begins his training with Saber… in which he gets pretty beaten up by her hahaha…
The 2014 “Trace On” inner-workings are WAY COOL!!
It’s admirable for Shiro to train in physical combat and his strengthening magic in order to be a better mage and master. The only problem is that randomly practicing mana without any kinds of barriers makes him completely vulnerable to those who seek to track him down through the detection of mana. This is how Caster weaves a spell over Shiro and lures him to the shrine. Big plot change here from the Fate route. In the first adaptation, Caster didn’t appear until way later in the show. While Caster and Shiro are having a short spat, Saber is preparing to fight Assassin outside the shrine. I love the way Assassin converts into this new animation. Absolutely stunning and crisp features. I’m not entirely sure why Sasaki Kojiro has been summoned into the Assassin class because other than the fact that he was assassinated in his historical life, he seems more like a Saber type with his sword?
Junichi Suwabe is KILLING IT as Archer, especially when he intervenes, on Rin’s behalf, to save Shiro from Caster. This Caster is certainly clever versus the Fate/Zero Caster who was just kind of insane. At the same time though I would argue that the Fate/Zero Caster and his actions turned into a huge plot point that became essential to quite a few main characters’ development in the series. Still, the earlier reveals and interactions of ALL the servants make for tons of great action scenes as well and Servant to Servant taunting. All Servants are definitely arrogant to some extent, or at least, extremely sure about their strengths and abilities but “pride goeth before destruction and a high mind before the fall” and one small mishap could completely tip the scales in combat in the Holy Grail War.
