Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso Episode 14 Review

We return to Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso this week with Kaori’s hospitalization… which scares about five years off of Kousei’s life. When Tsubaki tells him he literally runs past her to spring to the hospitalization. He even sees a visage of his mother as he opens the door and Kaori is sitting atop the bed. The hospital, its sounds and smells, are not good for Kousei…

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso Episode 14 (12)I Love Kaori for the comedy that we get between her and Kousei but I also love seeing both the playful girly side of her but also the romantic artist within her when she picks up the violin. After all her friends go home, Kaori is set back up with the IV… omg. All those death flags.

Tsubaki continues to struggle with her feelings for her baseball senpai…

The episode does a pretty good job of balancing both the emotional with the comedic but really I wait episode by episode for all those lovely music introspective moments and exchanges between Kousei and Kaori…

“My memories of my mother turned into notes, and flew up into the sky…” – Kousei

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso Episode 14 (13)When Kaori chose “Love’s Sorrow,” she chose the song with Kousei in mind, once again subtley pushing Kousei forward despite his reluctance. This is one of the most sorrowful moments of the show because Kousei really longs to play music with Kaori again. At the same time, it’s a longing to play music with her borne from a fear that he’ll lose her to some horrific disease like all those years ago, and perhaps with the loss of another loved one means the loss of more music…

Amidst these emotionally charged hospital moments with Kousei and Kaori, we get a few flashback childhood scenes of Kousei and Tsubaki side by side. The contrast in these comparisons really serve to highlight the differences between both girls’ friendships with Kousei. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso Episode 14 (23)It’s also mentioned in Tsubaki’s child and strongly hinted that Tsubaki REALLY doesn’t like music… Also, Tsubaki, GIRL, stop mentioning another random guy next to your supposed boyfriend. Lack of self-awareness bothers me in female characters. It does seem like Tsubaki is one of the more underdeveloped characters in the series in general so I don’t feel entirely attached to her in the story, not as much as the main characters nor the supporting musician characters like Emi.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso Episode 14 (26)Episode fourteen seriously gets complex… there is SO MUCH going on with all the characters individually and between each other. The anime did a pretty great job in organizing all the different sequences of emotional and interpersonal moments so that we get all of Tsubaki’s emotional build-up right in episode fourteen to the point where Kousei reveals to her that he’ll be leaving for a music school in high school. Just as she begins to realize her feelings for him, she starts crying from this new reveal. The music in the background was absolutely BRILLIANTLY PAIRED UP with Tsubaki’s scenes. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

“Music is taking Kousei far away from me…” – Kousei
