“There was a boy that I met in April… I made a promise with that boy.” – Kaori
This episode kicks everyone from every perspective into gear. It starts with Kaori’s decision to pick up her life, start rehabilitation programs and go through with the surgery that she’s previously ignored. Her parents are worried, sure, but Kaori is taking control of her own life. It’s an ironically poetic and beautiful turn of events, from how Kaori was the one to bring colour into Kousei’s life, to Kousei becoming a support system for Kaori and inspiring to take up music once more.
“Even if it gives me only a little more time, even if there’s only the slightest hope, I’m willing to cling to anything.” – Kaori
While Kousei is striving for his music dreams and Kaori is getting her act together one step at a time, Tsubaki is wallowing just a bit in middle school romance angst… and it seems pretty inconsequential when it comes to all the larger challenges in life that her peers are facing.
I especially enjoyed the three-way support system that has emerged between Takeshi, Emi and Kousei. Kousei is taking hold of his music life and his stage. Takeshi is finally letting go of his obsession with his hero becoming his own person, his own musician. I’m impressed to see him take to the stage in such a mature fashion. At the end of all this we see that three-way thematic discussion on heroes, idols, enemies and competition flushed out to the peak in Takeshi’s performance.
“This is the stage where I’m parting ways with you…” – Takeshi
Seems like mayonnaise and egg sandwiches really bond people after all…
Now, the anime series is really chasing the manga like there’s no tomorrow. I don’t exactly know if the manga can afford to show Kousei and Tsubaki’s entire childhood back story but so far the anime has done a fantastic job at compressing the chapters into properly paced episodes. I get the feeling that if the anime wants to hit that last performance between Kousei and Kaori, they are going to have to sidetrack some Tsubaki drama…
Everyone else is practicing intensely for the competition in June, the pressure is on.
