I’m really impressed with how well Unlimited Blade Works has flushed out other parts of Shiro’s personality, the topic of ethics and morality is so much deeper in UBW than it is in the first route.
Love the epic new opening too, so much more emotional than any other previous Fate opening.
On the other side of the war, Caster is reflecting on her past with her stuck up master and difficulties in partnership. She’s so much more powerful than any mage in this age. Caster goes rogue using her own Noble Phantasm, Rule Breaker to part ways with her former master. After she kills him, Lancer comes to attack Caster and after she narrowly escapes, she meets Soichirou who takes her into his home. Somehow I don’t feel any more empathetic to Caster as a character despite knowing her “tragic” back story. If anything, I’d have preferred more of a focus on Rin and Shiro in this episode.
I got super excited this episode to see Illya return to the screen. Seriously, I cannot get over her image from the Kaleid Liner spin-off but I do love her little mischievous self in Fate Stay Night as well. Unexpectedly though, Shinji and Gilgamesh make a visit to the Einzbern mansion. Gilgamesh makes quick work of Sella and Leysritt. The scene with the deaths is beautiful in such an ironic way. Big props to Illya’s epic entrance with Berserker though (way to break a hole in your own castle) but also, COULD YOUR TIMING BE ANY WORSE ILLYA. Sigh. I really liked Sella and Leysritt.
The second season is wasting no time with their action and there’s no doubt that there will be a huge fight between Illya and Gilgamesh as he slayed both her servants. GAH I really don’t like what happens to Illya in this route but things go from regular twist to complex twist after this battle.
Dayum I’d like to see Gilgamesh skewer Shinji =.=”
