Subaru seems to be caught in that strange transition phase between regular girl and magical girl. The entire episode is centered around Subaru’s resolve to rekindle things with Aoi and learn how to fly on her magic scepter.
It seems that every time the girls get a new member, something in reality changes to accommodate them. This time, all five of the girls have ended up in the same class. Also, while the Pleiades has claimed to summon a few of the girls, he doesn’t have enough power to summon all of them which hints at another powerful entity at work behind the scenes. Each of the girls’ threads of fate seem to have converged into one world so that they are brought together. For this reason, Subaru and Aoi went from being immensely close friends to awkwardly distanced (hence the misunderstanding in the first episode). Apparently once all the fragments are gathered, the threads of fate will shift back to normal, whatever that means… But for now, it’s all shelved aside for magic girl 101 with Subaru after school.
The girls attempt to teach Subaru how to ride a drive shaft. It doesn’t go quite well and Subaru ends up being a bit discouraged. She ends up in the magical garden again and talks to her friend Minato for a while. Feeling cheered up and encouraged, she resolves to enjoy the magic girl ride while she can.
I do love the theme of stars and space in this series despite the magic girl main theme. I’m also really impressed with how smoothly the flying is animated. Surprisingly, magic girls follow physics because the higher you go in altitude, the more you lose speed and vice versa. Halfway through the tutorial session, another spaceship piece appears and after some antagonist interference, capturing the pieces gets pretty complicated. Once again though, the red-haired demon steals a piece.
At least by the end of the episode, the girls get a new club room/headquarters… secretly masked as the cosplay research club LOLLLL I’m actually looking forward to seeing more slice of life scenes after all the action of the first two episodes.
