Akagami no Shirayuki-hime Episode 3 Review

Rating: 4/5 happy clouds Crop_4 Clouds Transparent

Akagami no Shirayuki does a pretty good job of keeping a balance between romance and every day common sense. The series doesn’t get too swept up in the Shirayuki x Zen ship that it completely disregards the rules of the world. Just because Zen is a prince doesn’t mean he can do whatever he want without consequence. In fact, it’s because he’s a prince that his friendship with Shirayuki would naturally raise eyebrows around court. One such Lord Haruks is particularly concerned with the criticism around aristocracy and court when it comes to Zen’s close cohorts.

Akagami no Shirayukihime Episode 3 (17)Lord Haruka conspires to scare Shirayuki from the castle and what I enjoyed about his way of scheming is how subtle he approached it. While hiring an assassin to fire an arrow at her was the most extreme bit, he ended up accepting Shirayuki anyway when he saw her resolve. Also, the prince’s word is final so it’s not like Lord Haruka had a choice in the matter.

Shirayuki became a really admirable character for me in this series. We’re only three episodes in and we’ve already seen what a strong and kind person she is. Whether it’s her independence or her friendship with Zen, she’s unwavering in who she is. She’s fixated on doing everything honestly and patiently without taking short cuts. Even when it comes to Lord Haruka who practically cut her down with his sword. Akagami no Shirayukihime Episode 3 (20)She’s a herbalist who doesn’t know anything about self defense but she’s still fearless when it comes to what she believes in… a huge step for strong leading female characters. I can’t wait to see Shirayuki pass the court herbalist test and officially enter the palace by Zen’s side.

Sidenote: The OST score is pretty awesome. A few pieces jump out at me and I can’t wait to hear the entire track list once it releases.

I do wonder if in the long run Zen will be able to potentially marry Shirayuki because they are completely different backgrounds. At the same time, does Zen realize there is a completely social gap between them? It’s fine to be friends, but I suppose the romance will run into complications later on. At the same time, Zen is only the second prince of Clarines, have we even see his brother yet? Who is the crown prince and will there be some love triangle drama later on? I’m so curious…
