Canadian Winter 2013 Ice Photography

Hey guys, it’s been a really busy two weeks catching up on reviews and other otaku features. Today I felt like winding down with some classic landscape outdoors photography. For those of you who don’t live in Canada, this is just how cold it can get…

Taken with my trusty Nikon 3100, Sigma 17-70mm macro lens and a lot of strange photographer positions on the ice and in the snow. Even for Canada, it’s pretty rare that everything gets ice-ified outside so it was a good opportunity to take some interesting pictures.

Gundam Seed Winter Ice Photography

Hey guys, so if you’ve known me for a while, you might have caught on to that fact that I’m Canadian. Yeah, that means it snows. A lot. In the winter. But hey that gives me plenty of opportunities to practice lighting in intensely white landscapes or dull grey overcast weather. Today I wanted to share some new figure photography in the winter snow starring Lacus Clyne and Cagalli Yula Athha from Mobile Suit Gundam Seed and Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny. As always, only some of the contrast and brightness is edited and all the photos were taken with my trust (though somewhat basic) D3100 and my favourite Sigma 17-70mm macro lens.

Hope you guys liked this little photo shoot. Got down on my hands and knees in the ice and snow while my dad was shoveling the driveway… the neighbours probably think I’m a weirdo but you do whatcha gotta do for your photos right? More fun winter holiday stuff to come soon! Thanks for reading!

New Nikon D610 & D5300 Rant

My lovely photography friends, as you all might know, the Nikon D610 and the Nikon D5300 was recently released in the last week or so. My goodness, that beautiful new Nikon D610… well, it very much resembles its predecessor the Nikon D600, except for a few extra features. Nevertheless, it’s a wonderful full frame to get your hands on… If you close your eyes and swipe your credit card without looking. My inner photographer artist aches for a full frame and just as I contemplate trading in my basic D3100 for a full frame, my inner frugal poor university self goes and beats the crap out the head-in-the-clouds photographer artist that’ll definitely leave me broke one day. (◞‸ლ)

Let’s look at the specs…

D610bodyNikon D610:

– 24.3MP Full-frame sensor CMOS sensor

– ISO 100-6400

– Max 6fps continous shooting + quiet continuous shooting at 3fps

– 39 AF focus points, 9 cross type AF points and 33 points available at f/5.6

– Refined auto white balance system

– A 3.2 inch LCD screen with 921k dots

– Dual memory card slots

– Wireless flash control

– 1080p30 full HD video with uncompressed video recording (HDMI)

Retail Price: $1999 (body-only) (;´Д`)

I have to say that I think I’ll really benefit from the new white balance and quite continuous shooting mode so I don’t feel so self-conscious taking a whole batch of photos at quiet formal events. However, id on’t know if the slightly improved shooting speed will do much. The body-only kit is already up to almost $2000 and other upgraded kits with an additional lens and other accessories will amp the price up to $3000. ┻━┻ ︵ ლ(=益=ლ

D5300bodyNikon D5300

– 24.1MP DX format CMOS sensor without OLPF

– ISO 100-12800 (to 25600 expanded)

– EXPEED 4 processing

– 5fps continuous shooting

– 39 AF points, 9 cross type points

– 1.04M dot 3.2” vari-angle LCD monitor

– 2016 pixel RGB metering senosr

– 1080p60 video recording + in-built stereo mic

– Available in Black, Grey and Red

Retail Price: $800

Is there really any change from the D5200? What do you guys think? I was never a big fan of this series, the body feels a little bulky to me but that’s because I have quite tiny hands but I know this is a popular series for some.

Since the D5300 isn’t full frame, the price is just a litttttttleeee bit less than the D610. Well, as much as I would love to get my hands on either of these new releases BUT my wallet and my inner frugal stick-in-the-mud self disagrees with the intense market prices. But have any of you gotten these newbies already? Or are you, like me, waiting for those Christmas sales and special promotions? (*´∀`) hehe

Till next time!

Sunset Photography On-the-Road

Hey guys, I wanted to share some photography with you all today. I actually took these last week in the car while I was on the road back from Kingston. There’s not a lot of nice landscape to take while you’re on the highway so I opted for some creative photography in the car. Whenever I’m going on trips, I always bring my little Yui plushie with me because I love using her for vacation photography. Yui’s personality is so carefree and happy that she goes well with many spring and summer sunny landscapes. This time I threw Sebastian into my backpack before I ran out of the house and I tried out a few photographs with him but he’s more suited for domestic settings dontcha think?

I love photographing sunsets because they’re different every evening. Sometimes the lighting becomes the focus of the photo, sometimes it’s the swirling colours and clouds. This little collection of photos were taken with a D3100 Nikon and a 17-70mm sigma macro lens with no edits at all this time.

I hope you guys enjoyed this post. I’ll be driving into Kingston again this weekend so I’ll try to get some photography done again this weekend. Thanks for reading!

Photography with Ho-kago Tea Time!!

Hey guys! I am super excited to share you guys the K-On themed photography that I did with my set of H K-On! Tea Time in Wonderland Ichiban Kuji set by Banpresto.

I absolutely fell in love with this series of dolls when I found them in Japan and I went about scouring Electric Town for the full collection. I was inspired to come up with a separate little story and I started with Mugi. My last shots with Azusa were more challenging because I didn’t know what to do with her! In the end, I changed it up with a K-OnXMy Neighbour Totoro Crossover. Since I loved the Wonderland theme, I wanted the photo to portray Azusa stepping into Wonderland (or in this case, Totoro’s world), for the first time. I tried to keep things sweet and fairytale-like overall and played around with a few of the coloured filters which was especially prominent in bringing out the blue in Mugi’s eyes. The only touch-ups were in some brightness and a bit contrast as always.

All of these photos were taken with a D3100 basic Nikon DSLR and an AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR. Normally I don’t use the kit lens a lot because I’m really into extreme close-ups or super wide- fisheye distortions with my shots. The 18-55mm range is usually a family gathering, snapshots for fun kind of lens for me.  Ideally I would prefer my Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro however that lens is currently under maintenance and I won’t be picking that up till at least tomorrow.

Despite the change-up in lens styles, I’m really pleased with how these photos turned out and I hope you guys like them!!

Today has been a very K-On filled day, wouldn’tcha say? Thank you so much for dropping in and if you enjoyed this post remember to hit like or follow for new stuff that’s coming every day!

Hong Kong Dragonboat Carnival 2013

Hello fellow photographers, viewers and bloggers!

Here’s some cool photography I shot from the Dragonboat Carnival in Hong Kong this year. The composition was a little tricky to work with since the dragonboats are so long and there were tons of distracting banners in the background. I’m not usually a sports photographer so this was my first time shooting something this instant and far. These were done with a Nikon D7000 and a 18-200mm Nikon lens. Clearly I didn’t have enough zoom power since my 55-300mm lens was out of commission T_T Aperture and shutter settings vary since I played around with the numbers as the races went on. Also, none of these photographs have been touched up or photo-shopped in any way.

Do you guys have any tips for shooting sports games or sport events? If so, please let me know in the comments! Thanks for dropping in!

2013 Canadian Tulips Festival

Hey guys, so recently, my dad and I took my mom to Ottawa for the Canadian Tulips Festival in honour of her birthday. It was a really great weekend and I got a lot of photography done because I don’t usually get to do a lot of free photography shoots  the school year what with work and extra-curricular activities. Here are some photos taken from my weekend excursion, I’m really pleased with how they turned out.

Hope you guys enjoy these pictures!
