MCM Comicon London Spring 2015 (1)

Hey guys how are you all? Today I wanted to share with you guys all of the really awesome pictures that I got from MCM Comicon in London. I only had time to pop into London for a day since the convention is smack dab in the middle of my exam season but I had tons of fun talking with cosplayers, artists and con-goers all day. MCM in London takes place at the Excel Centre, an absolutely gigantic venue and rightly so because there were tons of panels and special guests featured for the weekend. I ended up at the Bandai Namco panel and Agents of Shield panel before the cosplay show. I actually found the Fall convention in London more exciting than the spring one because there seemed to be more anime cosplayers in the Fall however I ended up stumbling into a HUGE Disney photo shoot which was a real treat for me as a fan.

In order to travel light I brought along my Nikon 1 J3 with the 10-30mm lens great for casual photography and vlogging of course. My camera actually used up both batteries before the end of the day so I didn’t get as many photos during the cosplay showcase as I would have liked however I did grab a ton of video footage throughout the entire Saturday. The vlog will be uploaded soon and of course a Haul video is also in the works. I hope you guys enjoy these photos and don’t forget to check out MCM Comicon’s official site to see where their other conventions will be taking place in the UK.

MCM London Comicon TItle

Hey guys, how are you all? Today I wanted to share with you guys some really fun and casual cosplay photos I took at MCM London Comicon. This was my very first convention in the UK and I only went on the Saturday of the three-day con weekend however it was probably the biggest convention I’ve been to thus far… Although the panels were more of a minor aspect of the convention itself, it had a phenomenal Dealer’s Room, Artist Alley and sponsor’s stands presenting tons of great merchandise, fanart, crafts, and promotional activities for new games.

The MCM London Comicon VLOG will also be coming soon as well as the HAUL video on my channel =D

I also got to hear Shinichiro Watanabe speak LIVE. AHHHHH!!!! He talked a lot about his latest creations this year – Space Dandy and Zankyou no Terror, two series different in every way. It was really insightful to hear him talk about the contrasting elements of each show from its animation to its music and Watanabe-san’s own connections with each series and plot. A fan asked Watanabe-san what motivated him to create a story using terror as a theme and Watanabe-san answered by saying that he didn’t start out with the desire to explore the theme of terror. Rather, he started out with the characters, a group of troubled teenagers against society and it just so happened that the medium of the story through which these characters were explored was terrorism. Was it realistic? Yes and no. Watanabe-san said he intended it to be both realistic and also sort of fantasy-like and he decided on a somewhat open-ended conclusion to the series because he really meant for his viewers to offer their own interpretations of the story, its emotions, characters and themes. It really was such an honour to hear him speak about his works.

Since Saturday is always the biggest day of the convention there were TONS of cosplayers. I really enjoyed the convention as a fan so these pictures are really casual and unprofessional in every way. I took them with a Nikon 1 camera and really just snapped shots of what I liked and a lot of times I ended up zooming in to crop the feet out just cause I was so intrigued by the actual cosplay piece itself. I hope you guys enjoyed these photos nonetheless.

My favourite pics are definitely the ones I got of Love Live’s μ’s (Muse) idols. (∩˃o˂∩)♡ Not gonna lie, I really tried to find all of them…

Cloudy the Ghost Says…

Just wanted to drop in and wish you guys a HAPPY HALLOW’S EVE!!!!!

Posting has been slowing down a bit recently because my laptop is having so many problems. So I’ll try my best to catch. up our fall anime reviews for Tokyo Ravens, Kyoukai no Kanata and another Kill La Kill rant this weekend! (Pssst, there might be a Clannad After Story review coming very soon)

In the manga section…. Missions of Love 5, Haganai 4 (maybe), and a new old series I started reading that’s a secret till it gets posted 😉

Blood-CDo you guys want to see some fanart? Then hit me a like or comment on what character you want me to draw. I’ve been busy with lots of school stuff but I’ll definitely try to fit in some visual arts if you want some of those posts.

What are you guys watching for Halloween? I might put on some Blood-C to go with a hot chocolate and pumpkin sugar cookies tonight. The anime is done by CLAMP so the art is reminiscient of their classic long and slender style. The story, however, is a little dark and falls into the supernatural genre so it’ll be nice to set the mystery mood tonight

I hope you guys have a safe and fun Halloween!! =)

Cloudy’s Top 5 Manga Art Styles

Hey guys, recently with all my new manga released, I’ve been flipping through a lot of my favourite series to remind myself of the events thus far which really inspired me to do this post on my top 5 manga styles.

5) Clamp- No shoujo artstyle list or discussion or forum exists without some mention of the clamp trademark. Unnaturally tall but slender and elegant bodies coupled with a manga aesthetic that seems so natural and effortless for the reader, clamp is simply timeless.

4) Ema Toyama- Creator of I Am Here and Watashi ni Shinasai!!- Missions of Love; you’ll instantly fall in love with these series from the art alone. Toyama’s style exaggerates the eyes and facial expressions, especially in close up panel shots. Its slice of life high school stories with a feminine touch to it making it very well received with the shojo demographic.

3) Jun Mochizuki- If you’ve read pandora hearts, you know what I mean. There’s a fine balance that you tread when adding subtle detail to the eyes to make them both cheery and creepy at the same time. There’s a sense of warped dimensionality to the plot and the characters are essential to bringing out this dark yet whimsical theme.

2) Yana Toboso- Tobaso’s famous Black Butler series has become one of the most well-loved series out there. Her art style boasts gorgeous landscape art, intricate character costume designs and stunning body figure action choreography making the panels flow seamlessly from one animated panel into the other, she’s truly a master at what she does.

1) Hotaru Odagiri- She is the author of Uraboku or Betrayal Knows My Name. Her artstyle really encapsulates the epitome of shoujo art. Stylistically, the smooth gradient colouring and excessive shading typical to shojo manga but she’s made her characters immensely distinguishable and impressionable. I originally borrowed the series from the library and I’m totally set on buying the actual volumes because the art is just so gorgeous.

Hope you guys liked this post, let me know what your favourite art styles are in the comments! Thanks for reading and I will talk to u guys soon 🙂

Why I Wait for Official Translations

Hey guys! Welcome to another segment of Light Otaku Living!

DSC_0014b

I’ve missed writing these kinds of posts and today I’m going to talk a little bit about why I wait for official translations of manga.

DSC_0001b1) Bad fan translations- I know teams of translators make a great effort to translate manga for fans and other readers, I have seen typos and clunky grammar. I do read online manga because some sites really have very good translations but sometimes if the script really isn’t fluent, the story loses its impact and as a reader, I start to lose interest because nothing makes sense.

2) Losing the idiomatic dialogue- Dialogue is one of the most important parts of the story in both developing characters and furthering plot. The most difficult aspect of translating is balancing grammatically spot-on translations and keeping the language in context to the story. When you buy official translations, professional translators, editors and a whole team of people have meticulously checked and rechecked the script to make sure that we get the best translation possible when we’re paying for it.

Here’ an example from Strobe Edge Volume 5. When I went to look for scans online, I found that the translations slightly differed and that the official translated script isn’t as wordy and convey the same if not better dramatic impact.

Difference

Of course I have moments when I just can’t wait and I look up the next volume online but even after reading, the script doesn’t seem as constant because of the way the translations vary from site to site and to the official translation that’s released much later.

3) Worth the wait- Waiting for manga is grueling but book release days are SO EXCITING AND SO MUCH FUN!… until that awkward moment when you’re hugging the new volume in the store happy jumping and the sales clerk is staring at you strangely *cough* Also, waiting for official translations and buying them in the store is a great way to support your favourite manga artist so he or she can continue to write and produce for us!

4) Collecting the Manga- Of course, one of the best things about following and buying the series is seeing it grow on your shelves. A lot of many follows a general design theme or the cover designs swaps colour schemes every volume so you can slowly collect all the colours of the rainbow! And the best thing about buying the manga is that in a few years when some online websites are taken down, you can still keep your favourite manga with you.

5) Individual Preference- Part of why I read manga is for the art and for some artists like CLAMP or Ema Toyama, their stories and art are both such favourites of mine, I can’t help but own a piece of their amazing creations. Personally, I like holding a book in my hand, especially when it’s manga. I do have an eReader but the electronic tablet is nothing compared to the weight of the book and the excitement on setting your eyes on real pages of manga. I can curl up in my bed with manga or on the bus or subway. A laptop just isn’t as cozy in bed and it hurts my eyes to squint my eyes for manga on my little phone screen. Reading on an electronic screen just doesn’t entrance me in the story as much as a real manga volume does.
