Hey guys!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!! and WELCOME BACK to the seasonal favourites post!!
This season features a good mix of everyone’s favourite genres. There are TONS of new seasons for pre-existing anime that’s getting a lot of hype – most notable are Kuroko no Basket’s season three, Tokyo Ghoul’s season two, Durarara’s season two and Aldnoah Zero. Plus we have a handful of shows left over from the fall season as well as a ton of movies and OVAs to look out for. I’m not going to mention much about the new seasons because there’s enough fan hype for those. Instead I want to shift our focus onto some of the new variety of slice of life, comedy and fantasy in the upcoming January.
As I mention in every post, those of you who have followed my blog for a while now know that my taste is geared to slice of life, fantasy-action or shoujo-otome-romance series. I try to keep myself open minded about shows in the psychological or science-fiction genre but don’t follow those regularly. This season seems happily coincidentally tailored to much of what I like. If you’re still curious about what exactly I like to watch, check out the A-Z List in the pages above for a selection of past reviews.
“Now that you have a channel, which series will you review on the blog, and which will you review on Youtube?” Yes I have a Youtube channel and I don’t usually go for full season anime vlog reviews because they get fairly tedious on a weekly basis. I do however select one or two popular or personally biased anime to vlog about. When vlogs come, they come on a regulated, weekly scheduled basis as well.
Absolute Duo- One of my most anticipated series this season, I mentioned it in one of my previous seasonal posts as well because of all the news circulating but got the date details mixed up. The anime is being presented by 8bit this season. It follows a boy named Tooru Kokonoe who enrolls in an academy’s that specially trains individuals to fight with their “Blaze,” a weapon that manifests from the soul. Students are required to fight in pairs and while most people have offensive weapons, he summoned a defensive weapon. He ends up meeting an adorable girl named Julie Sigtuna. Each pair strives to become the “Absolute Duo”… whatever that might mean.

Kantai Collection: Kan Colle- This online battle card game and all its adorable moe- girls are finally being animated. The show is done by Studio Diomedea who previously produced Noucome and Akuma no Riddle. There will be a pretty huge cast of girls reprising their roles in the game but other than the blatant fan service, I wonder how much plot there actually will be…
Initially I thought this was coming out last season but details are vague. Luckily most of the anime hype has been confirmed now and an anime series will be out this season.

Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu Love!!- We’ve seen sparkly swimming guys, intense basketball bishies and adorable volleyball boys… NOW. FINALLY within the magic genre, we’re getting a MAGIC BOYS SHOW. AHHHH. The poster and the promo stuff look ADORABLE and actually feature a bunch of new seiyuu I haven’t heard much of. Actually the supporting characters’ cast is more notable than the main cast and I suspect they are largely there to garner more attention to the show. The anime is being produced by Diomedea and the theme song is sung by a fantastic collection of cast members including Jun Fukuyama, Takuma Terahima and Kamiya Hiroshi in addition to the five main characters.
I request a maximum amount of sparkles to be in this show.

Death Parade- I think I’m generally quite picky when it comes to psychological or suspenseful shows that fall outside my comfort zone but Death Parade has me REALLY intrigued. Produced by Madhouse, the story follows a character named Quindecim who finds himself caught in a death game? There are certain rules to be followed and certainly many twists. The characters themselves have unique names and well, the visuals look quite good. Two of my favourite voice actors are part of the cast as well, Tomoaki Maeno and Hosoya Yoshimasa which means it’s on my list.

Isuca- A fun comedy, romance, action, supernatural show comes your way produced by three companies: Arms, DAX Production and Mages. It should be something to fill the Gugure Kokkuri void as it advertises something similar in the spirits, comedy and exorcisms categories. Adapted from an ongoing manga series, the story follows a boy named Shinichirou Asano who hires a girl named Sakuya to do his housework but she’s really there to exorcise a creature around his house. Shinichirou lets loose one of Sakuya’s captured creatures by accident and the two pair up to re-catch it.

Koufuku Graffiti- This new anime series caught my attention because of its production company. Get ready for MORE HEADTILTS cause SHAFT is back with this interesting show that can be best summed up in the words “HAPPY COOKING FUN” …LOL. The story is based on four panel comics that are fairly new as the series started in 2012. The series falls under romance, seinen and I’m sure, some comedy so if domestic cute girls and cooking settings are your thing, give this one a go. The three main girls feature the voices of Rina Satou, Asuka Oogame and Mikako Komatsu.

Junketsu no Maria- Initially this anime series was left off of the list but I found the promo art quite interesting. The style of Maria’s character design reminds me a bit of Nanatsu no Taizai though the premise is vastly different. Since the show is generally targeted at an older anime audience the overall style boasts more realistic and earth tones. The synopsis tells of a girl named Maria who lived during the Hundred Years’ War as a witch in France. She ends up meddling here and there with her magic and I assume chaos (or romance… or both) ensue. It’s categorized in quite a few genres from comedy to ecchi, fantasy, history, magic and seinen. Pretty solid cast of experienced seiyuus including Yoko Hikasa, Kana Hanazawa, Hisako Kanemoto, Ono Kensho and Takahiro Sakurai just to name a few.
Release Date: Jan 11, 2015
Rolling☆Girls- This was another last minute addition to the list, a slice of life show produced by Studio Wit. You’d think after shows like Glasslip or Sora no Method I’d learn to stay away from slice of life shows but again, the bright tones of this promo art has interested me. Plus, the synopsis seems a bit more action-packed than regular slice of life. In this anime world, a Great Tokyo War split Japan into a number of independent entities. Each nation is ruled by its own prophet (Mosa) and army (Mob). The main group consists of four “Mob” girls who are ordered by their prophet to travel around Japan on motorcycle as liaisons between emerging nations. The synopsis doesn’t tell much but the premise is intriguing. Will there be any militaristic tones? How deep will they explore this political power balance or will the show be dominated by character interpersonal relationships and drama? The cast is led by Risa Taneda, Rina Hidaka, Himiri Hanamori and Ari Ozawa.

Saenai Heroine no Sodate-kata- A new anime adapted from a new light novel series featuring an otaku protagonist. Tomiya Aki works at a part time job and ends up meeting a girl named Megumi Kato… and then a bunch of other girls from a wide variety of backgrounds. The group convenes to develop a game aimed for sale at the next Comiket convention. If you’re into cute girls, romantic comedy and some fun otaku-related plot then this series is for you. Yoshitsugu Matsuouka retunrs tot the anime harem setting aftering voicing roles in series such as Akame ga Kill and Sword Art Online from previous seasons. His fellow castames include the lovely Ai Kayano, Kiyono Yasuno and Sasori Oonishi. The cast is really not bad at all so if you’re looking for something to laugh with through the gloomy winter, check this series out!
Release Date: Jan 9, 2015
Sengoku Musou- Adapted from the popular Playstation game Samurai Warriors brought to you by Tezuka Productions, this historical-action story takes place during Japan’s Warring States era and features a collection a wide collection of historical and fictional characters. The cast, led by Daisuko Ono is already worth the watch but I believe cast members from the game are indeed returning to their roles in this anime (they almost always do within the same franchise). The plot is military battle and historical heavy so take note before venturing into the series but if you’re looking for some intense action I’d strongly encourage you to go for this new series. The promo art doesn’t look as great as I thought it would considering all the detail that goes into the game itself but we won’t know for sure till the first few episodes.
Release Date: Jan 12, 2015
The iDOLM@aster: Cinderella Girls- As you can probably tell from the title, this show is about IDOLS and I don’t know about you but I’m eager to get back into the idol world. What better way to do so than with the premiere of the mobile game-adapted new iDOLM@aster anime? All of our lovely idols will return to the cast and produced by A-1 Pictures, the animation standard will be pretty top-notch. I don’t review idol-themed anime very often. I did do one for love live but these shows generally have the same theme. You start watching for the cool animation, stay for the girls and get hooked for the music.

Soukyuu no Fafner – Dead Aggressor: Exodus– I SWEAR WHOEVER DESIGNED THESE CHARACTERS ALSO DID GUNDAM SEED AND GUNDAM SEED DESTINY. CAN’T HIDE FROM ME HISASHI HIRAI. I KNOW YOU DESIGNED THESE CHARACTERS.
Wow. Okay. Got really excited there. Gundam anything makes me excited. I love how these characters look and I really can’t wait to see what this story has to offer. It’s technically set after the movie Soukyuu no Fafner – Dead Aggressor: Heaven and Earth but I hope they’ll be generous with context so I can watch the series without prior knowledge of the world. This sequel, Exodus, is set two years after Heaven and Earth. Come for the cool art style, stay for the refreshing cast, featuring an interesting mix of young and old with Kohei Kiyasu and Marika Matsumoto taking the leads and supporting characters comprised of Ryotaro Okiayu, Nobuhiko Okamoto <3, Tatsuhisa Suzuki, Kensho Ono, Nobunaga Shimazaki, Yui Ishikawa, Yuuichi Nakamura and MORE. The cast is HUGE and I’m looking forward to picking out the voices.

Continuing from the Fall Season- Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (reviewing), Shirobako (reviewing), Bonjour Koiaji Patisserie (final review to come)
New Seasons of pre-existing anime- KUROKO NO BASKET Season 3, Shounen Hollywood Holly Stage for 50 Season 2, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures: Stardust Crusaders 2, Durarara!!x2 Shou, Aldnoah Zero Season 2, Tokyo Ghoul Season 2
I hope you guys found something interesting to watch this series. Of course, if I’ve missed anything above or if there’s a series with lots of hype that I might have missed, please please please comment or tweet me any series you’d like to see First Impressions or potential weekly reviews for. I am particularly excited for Absolute Duo, Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu Love, and Death Parade… I know, weird mix right? But I also can’t wait to see what great things will come of the remaining series that will wrap up in the next few weeks. A poll will go up after the second or third week of the newly released anime so stay tuned for that and vote for your favourite shows! Thank you so much for reading and I will talk to you guys very soon. =)
