5 Tips for Making Friends in Other Fandoms

Sora and ShiroHey guys how are you all?

Today I wanted to do Light Otaku Living post that features five friendly tips for making friends in other fandoms because I remember my middle school and high school self being really apprehensive in making friends. I just wasn’t social at all because I felt so content and comfortable in my personal fandom bubble. In fact, later in life I realized it’s much more fun to engage in fandoms such as anime, kpop, comics, movies and the like when you’re surrounded by people as passionate for the medium as you are. This post was inspired by my best guy friend who’s a little bit anxious about making new friends because he’s transferring programs to a new university in the Fall. Like a lot of anime fans, he’s a bit awkward when it comes to meeting new people. So I hope you guys will find today’s tips helpful and encourage yourself to step out of your comfort zone to try something new.

KALMIA Illya1) Don’t Hate – It’s not weird, it’s just different from what you’re used to. Just because you don’t understand a fandom or its fangirls and fanboys, doesn’t mean you should immediately hate on it. Some fandoms are definitely overhyped and others are under-hyped, so take the time to be patient with people you meet and try to get past the mindless squealing and excited fangirling to really hear someone out and understand what they’re fangirling about when you realize their fandom is different from yours.

 2) Ask Questions – You know how you spent about forty hours memorizing random facts on your favourite anime voice actor or all the music show dates for your favourite Kpop groups? Chances are someone else is as obsessed with information hoarding as you. If you hear them mention a name you don’t know or a show you’ve never heard of, ask them to elaborate and chat up the conversation in that way. I don’t know about you but any conversation that lets me show off all my knowledge on all my favourite things is a conversation I’d like to keep going.

Renge3) Be Observant – This one is actually one of my most useful tips. Whether you’re at a club, an event, in class or at a convention, being observant is one of the most important things to keep in mind. When I first met one of my best fangirl friends, we were both attending a screening hosted by my university campus anime club. I noticed two keychains hanging from her purse from one of my all-time favourite anime series. I struck up a conversation with her and this year, she’s my new housemate. You never know where you could find and make new friends for life.

4) Don’t make Assumptions – It’s my understanding that there is a stereotype over all fandom Geeks and otaku. A lot of us fangirls and fanboys have been horribly caricatured as shut-ins who can’t have functioning lifestyles and proper conversations. Don’t assume fangirls or fanboys in your fandom are better than fans of another fandom. Similar to tip number one, keep on open mind and get to know each person as an individual rather than simply judging them based on what fandom they obsess in.

Nagi no Asukara5) Relax – Approaching people is hard, but take a deep breath, roll back your shoulders and stride confidently up to that person. You may surprise them and yourself when you find the courage to speak up. Don’t be afraid to bring up your fandom in introductory conversations when someone asks you about your hobbies. It’s not mandatory to immediately put forth the fact that you’re into so and so fandom but it also shouldn’t be something you intentionally try to hide. Like it or not, your fandom is a part of you, and really if you’re spending over twelve hours a day watching anime, listening to kpop, googling facts and engaging in this fandom, I hope you’d be proud of it and let it shine into your everyday self.

So I hope you guys enjoyed this post and found something relatable. These tips are based purely on my personal experience engaging in different kinds of fandoms from different cultures, not only in anime or Kpop but also various genres of music, dance, literature, photography and other topics. Yeah, I’m an obsessive person.

Haganai Yozora and SenaThe bulk of these tips are also inspired by what I believe is a healthy way to engage in fandom culture while balancing it with a perfectly social and healthy lifestyle. I didn’t include this in the list but you can also make new friends online now over MMO games and forums that engage with individuals all over the world as well as on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and other similar sites. If you’re really nervous about face to face conversations, start with a simple reply to someone on Twitter or just shoot someone a message. Interactions don’t seem as daunting over the screen and you can slowly build up your confidence to approach other fangirls and fanboys in conventions or clubs when you feel ready.

Thank you guys so much for reading!! I hope some of these tips were useful for you guys and if you did, you could always reblog on WordPress or share this on Twitter and Facebook ^^ If you have any tips of your own, feel free to leave them in the comments section below. Thanks for dropping into my blog and I will talk to you all very soon 🙂

MCM Comicon London Spring 2015 (1)

Hey guys how are you all? Today I wanted to share with you guys all of the really awesome pictures that I got from MCM Comicon in London. I only had time to pop into London for a day since the convention is smack dab in the middle of my exam season but I had tons of fun talking with cosplayers, artists and con-goers all day. MCM in London takes place at the Excel Centre, an absolutely gigantic venue and rightly so because there were tons of panels and special guests featured for the weekend. I ended up at the Bandai Namco panel and Agents of Shield panel before the cosplay show. I actually found the Fall convention in London more exciting than the spring one because there seemed to be more anime cosplayers in the Fall however I ended up stumbling into a HUGE Disney photo shoot which was a real treat for me as a fan.

In order to travel light I brought along my Nikon 1 J3 with the 10-30mm lens great for casual photography and vlogging of course. My camera actually used up both batteries before the end of the day so I didn’t get as many photos during the cosplay showcase as I would have liked however I did grab a ton of video footage throughout the entire Saturday. The vlog will be uploaded soon and of course a Haul video is also in the works. I hope you guys enjoy these photos and don’t forget to check out MCM Comicon’s official site to see where their other conventions will be taking place in the UK.

DanMachi Episode 5-6 Review

WOW I have been behind on DanMachi for many weeks. Life just gets UBER BUSY around exam times. Apologies apologies! But we’re returning to DanMachi this week to our favourite little goddess’s perspective. She’s too adorable when it comes to Bell. How long has she been a goddess? How long has she known Bell? Why is she so attached to him? I’m so curious… Why a human?

Episode 5 Rating: 3/5 curious clouds Crop_3 CloudsExcited Transparent

Hestia spends some time in the Divine bathhouse to prep herself for her date with Bell. Too cute.

DanMachi Episode 5 (5)Sidenote: That bathhouse animation though is just ugly. Someone please get KyotoAni in here ASAP to fix water animation.

A while later, Hestia and Bell go on their date. Bell seems as awkwardly nervous as Hestia. It’s too adorable that Hestia actually got a new dress for today. Unfortunately for her their date gets immensely interrupted as a flock of goddesses tail Hestia to figure out who her new man is. Hahahaha Hestia never ceases to amuse me in each episode. By the end of the day, the couple stumbles across a pretty view over the city at the top of a building.

After all the Bell x Hestia happy moments, we return to a pretty sketchy scene with Lily before bouncing down to the dungeon where Bell is back to work slaying monsters. DanMachi Episode 5 (14)Seriously, I wish Lily got her priorities straight and switched over to Bell’s side rather than simmering in these shady dealings. In regards to Bell I wonder if he’ll ever grow or mature emotionally as a protagonist and not just physically. He still seems SOOOOO naïve in consideration of the half-point we’ve reached in the series. And somehow by the second half of this episode Bell has developed magic skills… somehow… what… HOW?!?? I know you’re the protagonist but really, things can’t just HAPPEN to you, skills need to develop over time!! Or at least hint us with more foreshadowing for future reveals…

Overall I found the episode quite awkwardly paced. To be honest, the entire series chronicling Bell’s progression and growth as an adventurer is pretty sand-boxed style, meaning it’s quite free-form and there isn’t any direction. Other than immersing the viewers in this fantasy world and showcasing some interesting action animation, we don’t get much plot development until we flip perspectives to Aphrodite who has been previously hinted at meddling into the city. DanMachi Episode 5 (22)Also, for all the hype we got of Aiz at the beginning of the series, we never really got to see her again and she’s been sidelined so heavily as a supporting character she has been non-existent since the first two episodes of the series. She and her comrade stumble upon a collapsed Bell in the dungeon. It is wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon? No Bell-kun, probably not… except it’s probably not too safe… nor romantic. Lolz. Bell TOTALLY has a fanboy breakdown when he realizes that he’s been saved once again by a bishojo swordswoman.

I would really find the series more interesting if it focused more on the fantasy aspect regarding the gods and goddesses. If the story was told from Hestia’s perspective, we might get to see more fantasy-power struggles rather than romantic comedy slice of life and shallow magic-related action. I do wonder if Bell accidentally picking up a grimoire was the work of some goddess meddling rather than just a happy coincidence.

By the end of the episode Bell finds out about Lily’s back alley dealings…

Episode 6 Rating: 3.5/5 happy clouds Crop_3 Clouds Transparent

Despite Hestia’s harmless visage, she’s quite a clever little deity when it comes to keeping her close ones close with a close eye on her enemies. She suspects Lily as an untrustworthy supporter even though Bell seems quite intent on helping Lily with her shady dealings. DanMachi Episode 6 (2)As much as they build up the Soma guild to be a dog-eat-dog sort of system and emphasize Lily’s immensely impoverished and tragic back story, I still can’t bring myself to like Lily as a character or emphasize her. She’s mostly annoying to me in the light novel and the manga. I really wish Bell would expose her lies but Bell is just WAY too nice. In fact, we don’t even get enough nice scenes of Lily for us to like her before she BETRAYS Bell on the tenth floor of the dungeon. Lily ends up being double back-stabbed by her guild… AGAIN. Here we get to see Maaya Uchida’s brilliant voice acting here. From betrayal to hopelessness and resignation…

DanMachi Episode 6 (16)Naturally, Bell comes back to save Lily. The Lily who is now left with nothing, has come back to save Lily… well, thanks to Eina’s background move to send Aiz into the dungeon to save Bell’s ass. Seems like someone is always helping Bell in the background. Thank goodness Bell’s knife was strapped to Lily’s leg. I do admit that I ended up liking Lily more at the end of the episode after she yelled an entire spiel at Bell. It’s good to get these things out Lily, just let it out. OMG Uchida is just AMAZINGLY TALENTED.

To be honest I find it difficult to sympathize or connect with any of the characters in DanMachi. Except for Hestia who actually has deeper motivations stemming from her feelings for Bell, everyone else interacts on a shallow DanMachi Episode 6 (20)RPG script-basis which really doesn’t provide enough ample opportunities to showcase personality nuances through dialogue. As a result, each character slots perfectly into an archetype that fantasy fans are sorely familiar with, but none of them stand out in particular. This is one of the main reasons I lag behind in DanMachi every week. It’s got tons of interesting action and smooth animation but I don’t love any of the characters enough to actively seek out the series in my spare time.

Hopefully as we progress into the last few episode of the series, we’ll get to see the goddess-plotting come to light and knot up the plot with conflicts around Bell.
