First of all… HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! 明けましておめでとうございます (Akemashite Omedetōgozaimasu) and  新年快樂!! Second of all, thank you all for a wonderful 2013 here on Little Cloud Curiosity. K-On Tea Party

I’ve decided that during the in between season of anime to focus a bit on manga series. I do love reviewing new manga very much and I’m not going to do a list this time because I’ve realized that I review a lot on inspiration so I don’t end up following those lists very well. If I have a flash of inspiration pertaining to the Light Otaku Rants, I will definitely write those too. For anime, continuing from the fall Season into winter is Tokyo Ravens and Kill La Kill (whoo!) so this in between period is a great way to rewatch the series or reread some reviews to remember what happened in the first half before the second half begins. I’m working on the post for the new winter season as of right now. If you would like a list of all my fall season anime, check out the anime season page at the top or scroll through the side bar. If you’re looking for a rundown of the latest posts, check out the Recent Posts widget at the bottom.

This week I reworked some categories in the right bar so hopefully some reviews are easier to find. All the rants have been split from Light Otaku Living into the Light Otaku Rants category and all the manga reviews have been re-categorized as well.  Here is some fanart from Kill La Kill to welcome 2014, Mako’s positive determination is a great way to kick off the new year.

I hope you all had a great year wherever you are and here’s to more great things in the New Year. Cheers!!!

Cloudy Says…

Hey guys! I hope your Septembers are off to a great start. A lot seems to be happening this month. Some of the summer season anime series are finishing. Some new fall season series are beginning. New manga is being released. New soundtracks will be out soon. September is a month of beginnings! The only downside of September’s beginnings is… yeah, you guessed it. School.

Well, for many of you guys who are going back to your ol’ school routine, starting high school, university or college, I have some great tips coming soon for you otakus who are dreading the new year cause it’s a lot less manga and anime and a lot more studying.

For many of your who are familiar with my regular review rhythm, you know how much I like to stick on schedule but unfortunately, there’s a lot to plan before school starts. I’m settling into my new house (with no internet at the moment)… I literally have to sit next to the window to get the university’s internet signal from the school building next door or I won’t be able to upload posts. So between camping out at cafes for internet, working the anime club table to promote this year’s activities (I’m in charge of public relations) and trying to fend for myself in terms of living on my own/with my new housemate, I’ve really got my hands full.

Fret not! I have many new reviews coming your way all the time and there will be a lot more Light Otaku Living themed posts soon. Also, I am currently trying to organize my blog so that it’s easier to navigate in terms of topic-searching. You’ll notice that there are a lot more categories down the left-hand bar but as always, the search bar is fail-safe (hopefully). If you guys like what you see and you want more reviews and otaku rants, don’t forget to thumbs up your favourite posts and follow me through email or wordpress for new stuff coming every day.

Don’t’ forget to check out my fall season picks for something new to look out for!

Why I Wait for Official Translations

Hey guys! Welcome to another segment of Light Otaku Living!

DSC_0014b

I’ve missed writing these kinds of posts and today I’m going to talk a little bit about why I wait for official translations of manga.

DSC_0001b1) Bad fan translations- I know teams of translators make a great effort to translate manga for fans and other readers, I have seen typos and clunky grammar. I do read online manga because some sites really have very good translations but sometimes if the script really isn’t fluent, the story loses its impact and as a reader, I start to lose interest because nothing makes sense.

2) Losing the idiomatic dialogue- Dialogue is one of the most important parts of the story in both developing characters and furthering plot. The most difficult aspect of translating is balancing grammatically spot-on translations and keeping the language in context to the story. When you buy official translations, professional translators, editors and a whole team of people have meticulously checked and rechecked the script to make sure that we get the best translation possible when we’re paying for it.

Here’ an example from Strobe Edge Volume 5. When I went to look for scans online, I found that the translations slightly differed and that the official translated script isn’t as wordy and convey the same if not better dramatic impact.

Difference

Of course I have moments when I just can’t wait and I look up the next volume online but even after reading, the script doesn’t seem as constant because of the way the translations vary from site to site and to the official translation that’s released much later.

3) Worth the wait- Waiting for manga is grueling but book release days are SO EXCITING AND SO MUCH FUN!… until that awkward moment when you’re hugging the new volume in the store happy jumping and the sales clerk is staring at you strangely *cough* Also, waiting for official translations and buying them in the store is a great way to support your favourite manga artist so he or she can continue to write and produce for us!

4) Collecting the Manga- Of course, one of the best things about following and buying the series is seeing it grow on your shelves. A lot of many follows a general design theme or the cover designs swaps colour schemes every volume so you can slowly collect all the colours of the rainbow! And the best thing about buying the manga is that in a few years when some online websites are taken down, you can still keep your favourite manga with you.

5) Individual Preference- Part of why I read manga is for the art and for some artists like CLAMP or Ema Toyama, their stories and art are both such favourites of mine, I can’t help but own a piece of their amazing creations. Personally, I like holding a book in my hand, especially when it’s manga. I do have an eReader but the electronic tablet is nothing compared to the weight of the book and the excitement on setting your eyes on real pages of manga. I can curl up in my bed with manga or on the bus or subway. A laptop just isn’t as cozy in bed and it hurts my eyes to squint my eyes for manga on my little phone screen. Reading on an electronic screen just doesn’t entrance me in the story as much as a real manga volume does.

First of all I’d like to thank everyone who voted and commented in the poll so far. It’ll be there till the end of this week! If you want, let me know in the comments here if you guys wanna see more polls in the future.

I realize that I’ve been doing a lot a lot a lot of anime reviews lately so I’m gonna change it up a bit for the next few reviews. Of course I need to keep up with the summer series, but I might bring up a bunch of new camera related reviews. Also, I’m gonna bring back some manga reviews, some older series and some newly translated and released series.

I’m still waiting on Strobe Edge Volume 5 to be released here in Canada in its official translated version. The stores are having some problems getting certain manga here but as soon as I get my copy, you guys will get your reviews. Missions of Love Volume 4 is going to be released in two days and Black Butler Volume 14 is going to be out a week from today! I don’t know about you guys but I’m super excited for those releases!

At the moment, I’m brainstorming new ideas for Light Otaku Living reviews 😉

Thank you everyone for reading, liking and following. It means so much to me when you guys drop in. You guys are the best and I will continue to post interesting stuff every day!
