MCM London Comicon 2015

MCM Comicon London Spring 2015 (1)

Hey guys how are you all? Today I wanted to share with you guys all of the really awesome pictures that I got from MCM Comicon in London. I only had time to pop into London for a day since the convention is smack dab in the middle of my exam season but I had tons of fun talking with cosplayers, artists and con-goers all day. MCM in London takes place at the Excel Centre, an absolutely gigantic venue and rightly so because there were tons of panels and special guests featured for the weekend. I ended up at the Bandai Namco panel and Agents of Shield panel before the cosplay show. I actually found the Fall convention in London more exciting than the spring one because there seemed to be more anime cosplayers in the Fall however I ended up stumbling into a HUGE Disney photo shoot which was a real treat for me as a fan.

In order to travel light I brought along my Nikon 1 J3 with the 10-30mm lens great for casual photography and vlogging of course. My camera actually used up both batteries before the end of the day so I didn’t get as many photos during the cosplay showcase as I would have liked however I did grab a ton of video footage throughout the entire Saturday. The vlog will be uploaded soon and of course a Haul video is also in the works. I hope you guys enjoy these photos and don’t forget to check out MCM Comicon’s official site to see where their other conventions will be taking place in the UK.

MCM London Comicon TItle

Hey guys, how are you all? Today I wanted to share with you guys some really fun and casual cosplay photos I took at MCM London Comicon. This was my very first convention in the UK and I only went on the Saturday of the three-day con weekend however it was probably the biggest convention I’ve been to thus far… Although the panels were more of a minor aspect of the convention itself, it had a phenomenal Dealer’s Room, Artist Alley and sponsor’s stands presenting tons of great merchandise, fanart, crafts, and promotional activities for new games.

The MCM London Comicon VLOG will also be coming soon as well as the HAUL video on my channel =D

I also got to hear Shinichiro Watanabe speak LIVE. AHHHHH!!!! He talked a lot about his latest creations this year – Space Dandy and Zankyou no Terror, two series different in every way. It was really insightful to hear him talk about the contrasting elements of each show from its animation to its music and Watanabe-san’s own connections with each series and plot. A fan asked Watanabe-san what motivated him to create a story using terror as a theme and Watanabe-san answered by saying that he didn’t start out with the desire to explore the theme of terror. Rather, he started out with the characters, a group of troubled teenagers against society and it just so happened that the medium of the story through which these characters were explored was terrorism. Was it realistic? Yes and no. Watanabe-san said he intended it to be both realistic and also sort of fantasy-like and he decided on a somewhat open-ended conclusion to the series because he really meant for his viewers to offer their own interpretations of the story, its emotions, characters and themes. It really was such an honour to hear him speak about his works.

Since Saturday is always the biggest day of the convention there were TONS of cosplayers. I really enjoyed the convention as a fan so these pictures are really casual and unprofessional in every way. I took them with a Nikon 1 camera and really just snapped shots of what I liked and a lot of times I ended up zooming in to crop the feet out just cause I was so intrigued by the actual cosplay piece itself. I hope you guys enjoyed these photos nonetheless.

My favourite pics are definitely the ones I got of Love Live’s μ’s (Muse) idols. (∩˃o˂∩)♡ Not gonna lie, I really tried to find all of them…

Judgmental Otakus, The Rant…

Keep Calm and Watch Anime

So… have you ever experienced this?

Me: I really like “insert favourite anime here” \*v*/

Other Person: Ugh, why do you like THAT anime, it’s so stupid o_0

Me: But *insert favourite anime character here* is really awesome ._.””

Other Person: Ugh no. That anime is stupid. You’re stupid. =__=

Okay, maybe it doesn’t go down as melodramatic as this but it seriously does happen., and I’ve been in this awkward position. Casue seriously, how do you even respond to that? It’s like you’re judged by the fact that you like the colour blue while your “friend” likes the colour red. Why does my opinion even matter to you? If I want to fangirl over Eren and Attack in Titan just isn’t your cup of tea, don’t look at me like I’m a complete idiot. I will fangirl who I want to. I feel like there are a few circumstances where you might find yourself being judged for you like, or if not judged, at least given a few weird glances or eye-rolls.

1) Controversial Anime – and by controversial, I don’t mean an anime that addresses issues like abortion or euthanasia or any of that dark stuff. I’m talking about anime where the fandom is split RIGHT. DOWN. THE MIDDLE. Take Sword Art Online for example, that seems to be a big one since the anime finished in 2012 and still, you see Kiritos, Kiritos EVERYWHERE at conventions. There are some fans that absolutely love love love the series despite its flaws (cause let’s face it, every anime has flaws); then there are the fans who ONLY like the first part or ONLY the second part and an argument  friendly discussion ensues on some comment section when after fifty raging cap locks comments and then some off topic mentions of a cat video or something about religion, you decide that SAO is just GOOD and you leave it at that cause obviously you won’t convince that other internet stranger to change their mind even though you wasted two hours of your life trying to convince them otherwise.

Sword Art Online Poster

UtaPri 1000%2) Niche – Niche is actually a pretty wide department of selections, it can refer to a series that just has a strange plot premise and completely throws weird wild cards at you or it can refer to a series that’s directly targeted to a small specific viewership that already has a solid mini fanbase that will love the series no matter what. Otome is kinda like this – the main point of the stories is the romance elements. As an otome fan, you EXPECT there to be at least four guys chasing after one girl and you EXPECT the plot to follow or somewhat resemble the games you’ve already finishes and SORTA EXPECT the heroine to have a personality. In cases like Alice in the Country of Hearts or Haruka in Uta no Prince-sama, she’s great, she’s got her own goals and values – in other cases like Amnesia, when the heroine’s name is, well, you know, HEROINE and SHE HAS AMNESIA, she’s… not as great. Usually if you’re into niche genres or niche anime, only your fellow fangirls or fanboys will understand why you feel the need to collect twenty rubber straps of that ONE character while other people just look at you like you’ve gone insane.

BigFourShonenAnime3) What the People deem, “OVERRATED” – Most of us have probably been in this situation. Whether you follow the Big Four (One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Fairy Tail) which have HUMONGOUS WORLDWIDE FANBASES or you follow something that just rages intensely over tumblr and facebook due to the anime’s recent release like Free! or Attack on Titan. There are going to be a few people who just rain on your fandom parade by saying, “It’s so overrated, it’s not even good.” – but let me ask you this – how is THE ANIME BAD if A LOT of people are watching it? There’s a grain of truth in every rumour and even every overrated fandom. I think my friend Haley put it best when she said, “I don’t think you should not watch an anime just because it’s overrated.” Simple statement, lot’s of meaning.

I guess the point I’m trying to make it is – WATCH WHAT YOU WANT. IF YOU LIKE IT, SCREW WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK.

Don't Keep Calm

If you wanna watch a series about chocolate rivers with giant titans and singing turquoise-haired girls ALLLLLL IN ONE ANIME, GO AND DO IT – granted if they ever make something like that. But you know what I mean! At the end of the day, do what you want to do because you don’t want to lose out on a really great anime just because everyone tells you NOT to watch it and you don’t want to end up watching something you hate just cause EVERYONE tells you you’re not a “real” otaku if you haven’t seen it. Fangirl or fanboy over what you want. I’m 5 foot and relatively small, I’ve totally stood up to a six foot guy about why he should give Free! a try. Stand up for what you like, defend your favourite anime (don’t get into physical fights of course) but make your anime –pinions known to others and if your current anime friends don’t like what you want, sooner or later, other anime viewers who happen to appreciate the same stuff that you do will come along.

Well, that was a really long rant but I got out what I wanted to say. I hope you guys never come across judgmental otakus and even if you do, don’t let it get you down cause they have no right to dictate how much you love or don’t love an anime. I hope you guys liked this post, thanks for reading and special thanks to my friend Haley for that moment of inspiration for this rant.

if you want regular updates, you know how to follow.  Till next time!

Back-to-School Tips for Otakus

Oh no… Summer’s ended… and for many of you, that means school is starting. Again. For many of who for which that latter statement is true, you might be dreading the semester or term because it means there’ll be a lot more quadratic equations, classical literature and lab reports and a lot less anime, gaming and moe manga… So for those of you who need some help balancing all that schoolwork with otaku time, I’m here to help you out!

taiga

Konata1) Schedule Your Time- You are definitely going to need to prioritize your work with anime watching or reading manga. Balance is key. You don’t want to spend all day marathoning your favourite series and forget your assignments, but you don’t want to turn into a workaholic either.

Kirito_nervegear2) Explore your School Clubs- I’m the public relations executive on my university anime club and I have tons of fun organizing events and promoting anime nights. Go out and meet people!! Don’t just make friends online *cough Kirito* Sport your favourite anime shirt or your awesome buttons onto your bag. You never know who you might approach you because you had OnePiece buttons on your hat or you were using your Naruto frog coins purse 😉

3) Let your anime inspire you- Suzumiya Haruhi, Hyouka, Free- Iwatobi Swim Club, Hikaru no Go… Ouran High School Host Club? Take an example from your favourite anime characters and start your own club if a club you like doesn’t exist. Maybe you’ll make friends who like the same anime or manga as you and you’ll find yourself fangirling, or fanboying over the same series.

Azu manga Daioh4) Have some self restraint (I’m serious.)- Sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in a day for EVERYTHING. But remember, you still have the weekend. Get the serious stuff done first and use anime as a motivational tool and a reward for your efforts after you finish.

I hope you guys found these tips somewhat useful. Just be sure to be yourself. If you’re an otaku, be proud of it. Don’t worry what other people think because you’ll want to make friends who like the same things as you. If you’re nervous, just remember to smile! Confidence will come gradually so take it a step at a time! I hope your school years go smoothly!

FanExpo Canada 2013 Photography Part 2

Since I don’t edit much of my convention cosplay photography, the only difficult part is actually choosing the ones that go up on the site. Don’t worry though, no one was cut out! Here’s part 2 of the photographs taken on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was INSANE! I’ve never seen so many people crammed into a convention centre before!

All these photographs are completely eating up my media space on the site but it’s totally worth it! I hope you guys like your photos. Check out “Behind the Lens” for more of my work and I am available for cosplay photoshoots or any other events that require a photographer. I’m usually back and forth between Toronto and Kingston. Just shoot me an email to littlecloudcuriosity@gmail.com if you need me!

To the girl who cosplayed as Nanami Haruka from my favourite anime- Uta no Prince-Sama, YOU ARE AWESOME!! You totally made my weekend and I would love to do a photo shoot of you! Please email me if you’re interested!

Also, I can’t believe someone actually cosplayed as Haru from Free! (I wonder if he jumped into the fountain outside for a swim…)

Star Wars Photo Shoot! (A compilation of photographs) Most epic gathering of cosplayers I have ever seen By the way, anyone spot Waldo in the photographs?

Additional photos of cosplayers and panelists that my dad took with his camera! (Yu Asakawa is so pretty in person!)

This is the last of the cosplay and general convention photography. Special panel reviews + photography will come soon. Please check my latest Cloudy Says post for the list of posts/features coming soon!
